I don't know what to think. I don't have a problem if Theriot was at 2B or backing up SS and 2B but if Mozeliak gets rid of Ryan instead of Schumaker I'm going to be livid.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/cardinals-make-brendan-ryan-available.html

The Cardinals feel that Ryan Theriot is an upgrade at shortstop over incumbent Brendan Ryan. Ryan is now expendable, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "The Cardinals have let other teams know Ryan is available, and they'll look to trade him during next week's winter meetings in Florida, if not sooner."

Why do I feel like we're in on a joke to which only the Cubs and the Dodgers know the answer?

Ugh. There's no other team in baseball, other than the Cardinals, that has a manager who is really the GM. That would be dandy if he was good at evaluating personnel, but he's not. This is shaping up to be a La Russa Wet Dream: scrappiness in right field (Jay), scrappiness up the middle (Theriot and Schumaker) and Guy Who Got On La Russa's Good Side By Playing Out of Position That One Time (Freese).

They're building the perfect 81-win team.

I don't know. Last year, somehow Ozzie Guillen managed to get his guy and persuade Kenny Williams that Mark Kotsay was a better option at DH than Jim Thome.

Asked what went wrong with the Cubs the last two seasons on the heels of two straight playoff appearance, Theriot cited a lack of team chemistry.

"If you don't have that cohesiveness, the friendships among players, the camaraderie, guys in the clubhouse joking around, playing cards, going out to dinner, hanging out in each other's hotel rooms -- if you don't have that, you're not going to win," Theriot said. "In '07 and '08, we had it. We had a different cast of players. We had Kerry Wood, we had (Mark DeRosa), Scott Eyre, Jason Marquis ... You start to look at the character guys we had on that team ... that stuff gets forgotten about."

Is he saying that we didn't have enough white people on the team last year?

I'd say Ryan Theriot being in the top two spots in the lineup would also have been a contributing factor to 09 and 10 being failures.

I really hope the tradition of Cardinals dying during the season continues.

With rumors of Adrian Gonzalez, Zack Greinke, and Prince Fielder on the trading block, I knew that it could be an interesting offseason, but now that Brendan Ryan and his .658 career OPS just became available, its a whole new ballgame.

Pardon me if I missed this elsewhere, but on the same Waddle and Silvy show that gave us the Theriot quote above, we also get this gem from Ryan (recounting what Lou said to Trammell after Theriot missed a bunt attempt)

Lou: Alan, hey Alan. What is this? We got a 2 hole hitter who can't hit home runs, can't lay down a bunt, doesn't steal bases and can't play defense. What is going on?

It was time for Lou to go, but I gained a little respect back.

Umm, doesn't that mean he's NOT a 2 hole hitter, Lou?

I really hope the tradition of Cardinals dying during the season continues.

I hope they start a new tradition where they get lousy players like Theriot and bat them in front of Pujols. Theriot should lead off and Schumaker bat 2nd with Pujols 3rd.

Man, I bet a lot of Theriot bleeding hearts are gonna change their tune real quick.......

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-0116-cubs-convention-chicago--20110115,0,638938.story

Theriot made some caustic remarks about the Cubs organization to a St. Louis radio station after being traded from the Dodgers to the Cardinals in November, leading to his newfound status as a villain. He said he was "finally on the right side" of the Cubs-Cardinals rivalry and that the Cubs never stressed winning a World Series when he came up in the organization.

"It was almost an afterthought," he said. "It really wasn't talked about too much. It was like an unattainable goal. And now, being here with an organization like this, it's right there for the taking."

His comments angered some former teammates.

"I'm not going to lie, I was a little (ticked)," Geovany Soto told fans, drawing applause during a session with Carlos Zambrano, Koyie Hill and Tom Gorzelanny.

Hill said he was trying to be "politically correct" with his remarks after being asked whether Theriot would face any retribution from Cubs pitchers.

"There's probably a decent chance he's going to feel how hard the dirt is around the home-plate batters' box," Hill said. "At least once, maybe once an at-bat. I don't know how long it's going to take. I want to get an apology out of him, and until the whole team, the whole organization kind of feels satisfied …"

Zambrano then chimed in, adding he had had "only one thing to say" about Theriot: "He's the enemy now."

Why was Theriot a fan favorite here? He's kind of an [expletive]. I understand the small, untalented, white guy fetish that fans have but at least usually those players tend to come off as nice people. Theriot is a dick.
