Dumb. Tulowitzki was already locked up for the next 4 years. There's no need to make this type of commitment that far in the future.

Agreed. He's a wonderful player, but he has already had health issues. Doesn't seem like a wise move. This ain't the NFL. He can't hold out for a better deal. Why give him money just because you can?

i failed and posted this in another thread... apparently this happened longer ago than i realized.

anyway, here's some analysis from jeff passan. it is a bad deal for tulo because he "lacked the fortitude to chase the greater glory that awaited him elsewhere" and for the rockies because they can't afford his salary.

jeff passan sucks.

I seriously doubt the Rockies were like "Can we afford this contract for Tulo? What? No? [expletive] it, let's give it to him anyways".

Yeah, I don't think the Rockies will have any problem paying Tulo. They draw a very respectable crowd most of the year, and pack the place in if they're still in contention in Aug and Sep. They've got Helton's money coming off the books after this year (Holy carp, I didn't realize he's making 19M this season!) and if they resign him it'll be a whole lot less. Plus they've got lots of very solid pieces in guys like Stewart, Smith, Fowler, Ubaldo, and Cargo (though he'll get his payday too), who should produce at an above average level for relatively inexpensive in the near future. As for the injury concerns, I think you can write off this year as a fluke. Missed 6 weeks when a HBP broke his wrist, then he comes back and hits 15 homers in the final month.

Tulo is the Rockies franchise player looking forward and fans absolutely love him in Denver. For a stellar fielding shortstop who can put up MVP type offensive numbers AND just turned 26 AND exemplifies all the intangibles like "leadership" and "grittiness", I think it's a fair deal. I'd probably take him over just about anyone else making the same amount.

But the deal isn't for a guy who just turned 26, it'll be for a guy who just turned 30.

Who was already locked up longterm, just to reiterate that point. If he was a free agent to be in would be justifiable. Now it is not.

Yeah, I guess thinking of it that way it's a little curious they chose to resign him so far in advance. From the article on mlb it sounds like the Holiday contract situation in 08 and all its unpleasantness left an impression on Tulo and the team and they wanted to to nip it in the bud before it got . I still don't think it's an awful deal, provided Tulo stays conditioned to try to avoid injury particularly the groin problem that sidelined him before. The Rockies may be overpaying in the later years, but it won't be a bust on the scale of Mike Hampton or Soriano.

It's not just about avoiding recurring injuries. He will be in his 30's by the time this extension kicks in and middle infielders do not have great histories in their 30's. Injuries of any kind, related to previous ones or brand new could play a factor at any time.

This seems to be entirely a PR ploy, to show the fans they are in it for the long haul or something. But they've tried it with Hampton and Helton and got burned on both occasions. There's no baseball advantage to the deal.
