I wonder if we still had Rothschild if we'd have a better shot.

I highly doubt it.

Let me explain my reasoning. The report said Webb wants to pitch under an incentive laden deal to build his value back up. He's interested in meeting with the Rangers and Mike Maddux to discuss. He might have put a stronger emphasis on the Cubs if we had Larry, who is widely respected, rather than a relative unknown.

But since then we've seen reports that suggest the Cubs pulled out not necessarily Webb

A rotation of Z, Dempster, Silva, Wells, and Gorz isnt awe inspiring, but it isnt awful, plus, ideally, wed have Cashner, Jackson, Carpenter, and maybe Diamond waiting in the wings, although they'll probably be idiots and waste Cashner in middle relief, and who knows, something may click and Samardzjia will suddenly be good at baseball.

It's starting to look more to me like Webb and trading Gorz were connected moves for Hendry. I keep seeing that the Cubs have cooled on Webb, and it has been a while since I have read anything new about the Cubs actively shopping Gorz. I think there are enough bullets in the gun to put together a solid rotation as is if they aren't comfortable with Webb's medicals. I'd still love to see Chris Davis added as a lottery ticket/insurance for the bench.

I know Hendry has flown under the radar a lot of times and I understand the Rays are probably bluffing by saying they will not trade one of their starters, but I am not sure a Garza deal gets done without overpaying, nor do I think it gets done at all.

I think we are looking at: Demp, Z, Wells, Silva/Gorz, Cashner.

That being said, if the Cubs get Garza they have 3 pitchers who are capable of matching up with the powerhouse #1 starters on any given day. That combo would not be underwhelming at all in fact it would put the Cubs close behind the Cards and Brewers. Add in the Cubs pen and I think the Cubs will be the dark horse division winner.

Who are these starters?

I'd say Garza, Dempster and Z

I agree, all three of those guys are very good, when they are on.

My quote was under hanks name up there... Yes i am referring to Demp, Z and Garza... Any of those guys can beat any other teams' best pitcher on any given day, if you argue that than you obviously have not watched these 3 guys pitch. The are definitely more inconsistent, which is why they are considered true #1 starters, but they are capable of matching up.

Update: Webb (shoulder) reportedly talked to Texas on Tuesday, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Recommendation: Texas would like to sign Webb to a one-year deal with an option for a second year, but Webb is only interested in a one-year deal.

Good or bad for the Cubs? With the payroll crunch, would they be more willing to offer one year with no option, or less?

LOL, looks more like Randy Wells, a vastly overpaid #4, and a petulant child to me.

How is it that Garza, apropos of nothing, continues to garner comparison to Wells? Here's hoping we can resolve this in a tidy 5-6 pages, this time.

You're right. Wells has been better than Garza over the past two years.

There's a blurb on rotoworld saying Webb prefers to play in Texas and will take an incentive laden deal to reestablish his value. He's supposedly going to speak with Ron Washington and Mike Maddux this evening.

if you're trying to re-establish your value, why the hell would you want to pitch in texas?

seriously, that would be dumb

Worked great for Rich Harden...

Personally, I'm more curious about how Dempster is a "vastly overpaid #4?"

Because he doesn't look like an ace. Aces don't have male pattern baldness, red goatees, or a sense of humor. #4's do

Aces don't trip jumping over the fence in front of the dugout either. Classic #4 starter behavior.
