Hendry plans to make 2-3 good offseason moves

Cubs GM John Hendry told Gordon Wittenmyer of The Chicago Sun Times that he's not worried about making a splash this offseason, but that it's "really imperative that we have two or three really good moves."

I know this sounds similar to the very open ended being 4 big moves away from contention comment, but I guess the question is does 2-3 good moves mean:

Trade for Adrian Gonzalez or sign Adam Dunn

Trade for Zack Greinke or sign low risk/high reward pitcher IE Ducherer or Bedard

aquire solid late/middle reliever for cheap

OR Does it mean

trade Fukudome and/or Zambrano for salary relief

sign Brian tallett ro 3 year deal with NTC and player option

sign Lyle Overbay to 3 year deal

Maybe this could be an interesting off season after all.

If one of those 3 moves is signing Brandon Webb, I will be pretty pumped.

The guy who is still throwing in the 80's during his rehab games?

Meh, I wouldnt mind giving him a try for a cheap deal but hes not gonna make or break my offseason.

We won't know if they are good moves until July anyways.

True, but that won't stop us from declaring whether we think they are good moves or not the moment after they happen. This is America, after all.

If there anything like the Aaron Miles or John Grabow deals, we can pretty much chalk them up as bad moves before the ink drys.

I am not a Hendry fan but all of these stupid remarks about signing Lyle Overbay type players to 3 year deals are getting old, the longer term deals or free agent deals Hendry has made that have ended up bad are for players the majority of people on this board wanted Hendry to target. Bradley, Fukudome, extending Zambrano are all moves that many posters and fans were happy about at the time. Give it a rest. Has he made stupid moves, yes, has he given large contracts that were way over market value? Yes but those were players who were considered star players at the time.

He actually did not have a horrible offseason as a GM last year, has made some decent personel moves of late, and overall has a pretty damn good trade history for the Cubs, he is not in my top 10 choices of GM but give him some credit.

Yes, but it is still November. Maybe I should have thrown in the "cheap deal" wording as well. It won't make or break my off season, but it will make me smile more than signing Garland.

Umm. No!

I give Hendry lots of credit for the mediocrity of the Cubs.

This.

A lot of the Cubs problems can be blamed directly on poor personnel moves by Hendry.

So could a lot of the successes... The Cubs in the '00's have not been mediocre in comparison to previous decades

Being better than Larry Himes doesn't necessarily mean good. He's just a better version of bad.

This is what Hendry means:

Trading Fukudome (for Daisuke?)

Signing Adam Dunn (3-4 yrs)

Signing Kerry Wood (1-2 yrs)

Signing Jake Westbrook (1 yr)

Signing Bill Hall (1 yr)

The sad thing is, I wouldnt hate that. I'm gonna assume if they signed Westbrook they wouldnt trade fukudome for Dice-K kicking Wells or Gorzelanny to the pen along with Silva. So lets say they trade him for a bat to come off the bench or platoon with another starter.

Lineup:

1. Byrd, CF

2. Castro, SS

3. Ramirez, 3B

4. Dunn, 1B

5. Soto, C

6. Soriano, LF

7. Colvin, RF

8. DeWitt, 2B

Rotation:

Zambrano

Dempster

Westbrook

Gorzelanny

Wells

Pen:

CL - Marmol

8th - Wood

7th - Marshall

MR - Cashner

MR - one of the other guys that was decent last year

LR - Silva

Bench:

Castillo - C (jettison Hill)

Baker - MI

Hall - CI/OF

Fuld - OF

Piece from Fukudome deal - OF/IF

2nd or 3rd place here we come!

# The Cubs "seem a lot less inclined" to trade Kosuke Fukudome and Carlos Zambrano, though some clubs believe they'd discuss the latter. Stark says there's a vibe the Cubs will not go after Adam Dunn for their first base opening, instead looking for an above-average defender.

Really happy with the first part. Not as happy about the second part.
