I've seen the Steelers play at least 3, if not 4 or 5, times this year and I swear Reed has missed at least 1 FG in every game I have watched.

How many of those were home games?

2 (3 if you include tonight) I have seen their games at home against ATL, BAL, NE and their road games @NO, @CIN

Well, I didn't like the quarterback situation for the Dolphins coming into this week, but I liked it a hell of a lot better than I do going into next week.

That one worked out well for you.

I only saw the end of OT but that was definitely PI on OJ Atogwe.

How? Smith threw up a wounded duck with his receiver 10 yards away from the ball and Atogwe ran into him.

I agree I thought that was a terrible call. Both the WR and Atogwe are running to the near sideline. Smith throws the ball 10 yards behind him on the hash. So just because Atogwe isn't able to stop on a dime and immediately change directions that's PI? There's no way the WR was going to get to that ball.

On a lot of these, I would prefer no calls.

Trouble is, I can't quantify which ones I'd like to see a no call and which ones I wouldn't. I guess my main objection is becoming that we're seeing flags on way too many huge TDs or big plays. It just feels like there's always going to be a flag, and I don't remember feeling that way years back.

I prefer not feeling like there's always going to be a huge reversal on a flag all the time. I don't watch football to see refs throw flags. Heck, I'd prefer we computerize the whole thing and get the refs off the field entirely, if that were possible.

The best ref is the one we hear from less often, and when we do, there's no doubt about the call, IMHO.

I can't stand the effect that the PI penalty has on the NFL. It really does have such a huge impact on more than a couple games each week. I've seen enough completely wide open receivers botch easy catches that it's hard for me to justify a team get awarded all of that yardage on a judgement call like that. Half the time the ball might be catchable but not an easily catchable ball.

But I find it hard to change the penalty from spot of the foul to something lesser where it's more enticing for a defender who is beat to lunge forward and purposely commit a PI penalty rather than give up a much bigger gain and or 6 points.

And Soul I agree. I do not like bracing for a flag everytime te Bears do something good like a big kick return, a TD run, etc. Sure it's nice to see a long run against the Bears negated for a holding call or something. But overall it annoys me.

Yeah, that's the thing. I can't deny cheering when it benefits my team.

But stepping back from it, I would like to see the huge reversals happen less often -- on the really obvious violations.

It's a little more difficult than that, of course, because we're asking refs to make judgement calls out there and then arguing after the fact about whether it should have been judged that way.

Yeah, football is generally better with quarterbacks on the field. The Titans had QB injury issues entering the game and Vince likely shouldn't have been on the field even after Collins got knocked out. Then we took out two of your QBs.

The Titans played like crap, Moss only got 2-3 balls thrown to him (caught one) and both Vince and Kerry are hurt. I was feeling a whole lot better before the San Diego game than I am now. We need to get a QB healthy since we have the Redskins and Colts coming up.

When Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington(notes) stood under center for the team's first offensive snap on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, it triggered a potential $3.25 million bonus in his contract that awarded the veteran for appearing as the team's starting quarterback.

Though the contract details are a little murky, it appears that for playing those two snaps, Pennington earned a $400,000 bonus. That's $200,000 per play.

Pennington had a clause written into his one-year deal that would have paid him $3.25 million if he started all 16 games for the Dolphins. His first start triggered a reported $400,000 bonus.

Good job Dolphins.

If he got all 3.25 for one start that would be weird. But a few hundred thousand is not that big of a deal.

I think PI should be a 15 yard penalty instead of a spot foul. I don't have a problem with it being a defensive tactic, so much has been forfeited to the offense via rule changes over the years.

I would mind it very much. But there's no reason why you can't make an "incidental PI" a 5-10 yard penalty plus redo the down while keeping blatant PI as a spot foul.

i don't like leaving much up to the judgement of referees, though.

Fine, then keep it as is. You can't make intentional pass interference a smart defensive play. Say what you will about rules in favor of the offense, there is still plenty of defense being played and plenty of terrible offense out there.

Why not? They do it in college and it works fine.

College offenses are different animals. Most defensive backs aren't physically capable of purposefully interfering with deep passes. NFL defenders are right there and it takes pinpoint accuracy for deep throws to work. If you give these guys an opportunity to interfere at will, they will take it.

It is the same reason that gimmicky offenses in the NFL cannot be sustained.

Interfering at will? A 15 yard penalty is still a big deal.

And if you're talking about the pinpoint accuracy that is required then any DB is still taking a calculated risk by interfering when there's a good chance the pass won't be completed in the first place.

You don't see guys using holding or illegal contact downfield 'at will' when they're burned but the QB still has the ball in his hands and those are only 5/10 yard + auto first down penalties.

But the difference is that with a spot foul there's no realistic opportunity for the player to calculate whether it is worth the penalty. If it's 10 yards or maybe a 45 yard catch, you will see a huge increase in PI on purpose. It is a no brainer and coaches will teach it. Holding or illegal contact doesn't make any sense as a comparison and I'm not even sure why you'd try.
