just a heads up

"Chicago Cubs" - Todd Ricketts, one of the owners of the Chicago Cubs, goes undercover within one of baseball's most famous franchises and fights for the chance to redeem himself after being let go on the second day. Also, when a friend recognizes him parking cars, the boss panics that his cover has been blown, on UNDERCOVER BOSS, Sunday, Nov. 7 (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

It was nothing special. I was kind of worried to watch it since usually there's always one employee who is a joke and everything looks like its in shambles. There was nothing really inherently wrong. The employees weren't miserable, the working conditions weren't all that ridiculous, and there weren't many bad things said about the team or the company.

All that happened was they gave a hot dog vendor employee of the year, they gave the crew walkies, improved crew clubhouse, added a trailer to the parking lots with heat and air, added a crew family day, and that's about it in terms of improving the company. In terms of personal stuff, they gave one guy an offseason internship, paid for one guys college classes, sent one dude's daughter to swim lessons and Northwestern, and let the employee of the year throw out the first pitch w/ 4 high priced tickets.

It was boring. No real drama, no real "Holy crap I can't believe we let these people work in these conditions" type situations. Everyone there did their job well, and in the end they made it to where they could do it more efficiently. Nothing too interesting.

They were gonna sign Adam Dunn, but they spent all their money buying a new fanny pack Tupac poster for roast.

Very very boring.

They should've had Todd attend a game and then get yelled at to sit down by one of the octogenarian ushers on oxygen.

Of course it isn't.

At the very least we can assume that CBS picked up the tab for pretty much everything they gave the employees. And probably more cash on top of that to get the Cubs to participate.

If anything the show should have brought in a bit of fresh revenue to throw on the money pile for next year.

So now we have enough for Cliff Lee?

You can't have Cliff Lee. However, there will be enough money now to make a run at signing Austin Kearns. So, um, that's something. I guess.

How is that a scathing review? It's been known for years that the Cubs organization was a disorganized mess. You have a product that all but sells itself and new ownership coming in. They are going to replace people when that happens.

How is it not a scathing reivew? I didn't say I agreed with it, but the tone and information presented didn't paint the Ricketts clan too well.

I also don't think it's common knowledge that the Cubs organization was/is a disorganized mess, but they may have been/are.

I think the general perception is that the peopele he fired were doing a good job b/c attandence has been so high.

I don't have an opinion one way or the other, I just thought the article was an interesting, albeit predictible take on the new owners.

It read to me like sour grapes. Whining about a person who has "bled blue" for 10 years being fired from a job reflects more on the person doing the whining. Something scathing would have to have some substance to it. The marketing department was led by Mcwhathisface, but as the sale process went on the top dogs left and they just filled positions. It seems pretty likely that people were just filling roles they may not have been suited for. I'm surrprised it took them so long to fire some people. But if they didn't like the way the team was being marketed or how useless the vine line is, then why can't they replace people in those roles?

it was a scathing review, but an unnecessary one. plus it really sounds as if it's trying to degrade the lower-level employees.
