no, not baker. never baker.

He's not a great manager but VERY few people picked the Reds to win the division, so he deserves it. A manager that does not make the playoffs should never win mgr of the year, IMO.

Bud Black was handed Adrian Gonzalez and a bunch of other guys and he turned it into a contender. Same reason Girardi won it with the Marlins a few years back.

If you're given a plate of [expletive] and you make it taste like a filet... you win

i could have sworn that for the last coupe of seasons, people have been talking about this young Reds team having a breakout year. i'm not sure anyone picked them to win the division this year, but i think the talent has been there.

and i fully admit my bias against dusty

The Reds have been a "sleeper team with young talent" since roughly 1933.

haha, the pittsburgh writer voted posey #1, then neil walker and jose tabata #2/3. ahead of heyward. he should never be allowed to vote on anything baseball-related again.

Naturally, when something like this happens, there are going to be reactions like yours. There's also going to be a ton written in the blogoshpere.

Here's some of it. Some of the pieces have link's to Dejan's twitter account which is the only place he talks about it. (He usually takes off from the end of the season until the winter meetings.) IF you're only going to read one of them, read the first.

The Reds were widely predicted to be around .500 if not a little above with some people thinking they'd break through and make the playoffs. So they finished maybe 10 games better than expected.

The Giants were similar to the Reds - expected to be a .500 team. But they had the two-time defending Cy Young winner combined with Matt Cain in the rotation, plus Bumgarner and Posey sitting in the minors. They probably outperformed the predictions by around 10 games.

The Padres were widely predicted to the worst team in the NL West and one of the worst teams in the majors. Very few people thought they would even sniff .500. So they finished 20-25 games better than expected.

I can't believe King Felix actually won. This is fantastic. The only downside is getting into the inevitable argument with my Yankee-fan friends who have been saying for months Sabathia will be the hands down winner.

Ron Gardenhire and Bud Black win Manager of the Year awards.

It's weird. In Gardenhire's seven seasons with the Twins, the Twins were the only team in the AL Central not to win manager of the year. This is in spite of the fact the Twins were by far the most successful team in the AL Central in that time span.

Exactly, its a detriment against Dusty that he wasn't able to get them winning sooner.
