I saw a report on one website speculating that Pat Listach might be Quade's bench coach. I liked him as a hitting coach. Don't think it would be a bad pick.

What exactly is the role of a bench coach? Are they just someone to help keep the manager organized and give the manager someone to throw ideas off of? Along with having some sort of specific knowledge (hitting, pitching, defense, etc.)? Like Trammell with the infield defense.

Mostly, yeah.

During the game, it's an extra set of eyes in the dugout, another guy who has full knowledge of the scouting reports and your own players, who can watch the game and say to the manager "this guy's slow to the plate, we should send the runner" or "this guy's a dead pull hitter, we might want to shift the center fielder more towards left center" and stuff like that, a guy off whom the manager can bounce ideas like "what are your thoughts on a double steal here?" or "what do you think about pinch hitting this guy for that guy?", that sort of thing.

Off the field, as you said, the bench coach will usually be responsible for some facet of instruction: on Lou's full staff, Sinatro was responsible for instructing the catchers, Trammell for working with the infielders and Quade for working with the outfielders. Those three - infield, outfield, catching - will usually be split somewhere among the bench and two base coaches. The bench coach is also responsible for coordinating daily practices, stretching and drills, both in the spring and during the regular season.

So basically what you're saying is a manager's only real job is to set a lineup and field questions at press conferences.

Listach wouldn't surprise me. Weren't they together for 3 years at Iowa?

Yea apparently Listach and Quade are good friends, but from reports Ive seen, Listach is staying in Washington unless he gets a Managers position.

Why is everyone so high on Trammel? I'm not opposed to him by any means, but it seems like there are a lot of Trammel fans here and I'm not exactly sure why.

Good MI defense teacher? Feel bad for what happened to him in Detroit? Seems like a nice guy?

Outstanding former player who by all accounts has a really good tactical understanding for the game. Trammel's the best-known and most experienced of our bench coaches, so that's got something to do with the pref for him over Quade, Sandberg, etc.

Starlin Castro worked a good deal on his infield defense with Trammell, plus he apparently had a good relationship with Trammell. Other Cubs infielders seemed to enjoy working with him.

He's replaceable, but he seemed to have done a good enough job to merit staying on board another season.

I saw in the trib where Quade is looking at former Cub Gary Varsho to possibly fill a coaching position. FWIW

I have a strange, unjustified affinity for Gary Varsho.

Hiring him may just double the value of my autographed Gary Varsho photo from 2 to 4 cents.

Me too. I have no idea why.

I like this. Listach and Quade know the players in the Cubs system better than anyone. If Ricketts is going toward a "build from within mode" as he appears to be, he's got no better people then those two.

Has Listach coached anybody in the Cubs sytem? He knows Soto, but who else?

I'd guess some of the young pitchers.

Of the guys on the 40 Man: Sean Marshall, Randy Wells, Justin Berg, Carlos Marmol, Jeff Samardzija, Robinson Chirinos, Koyie Hill, Micah Hoffpauir, Tyler Colvin, Sam Fuld

Oddly enough, he never managed Soto.

I really hope the bench coach doesn't have much say with Quade.

Pat Listach, former Nationals third base coach and recent candidate for the Brewers managerial opening, told Junior Lugo Marrero at Periodico La Perla that making the jump from base coach to manager remains one of his goals. At the moment, Listach is managing the Ponce Lions in Puerto Rico, and he described his style as that of "an aggressive manager who likes the hit and run and moving players around the bases." In the shorter term, Listach will be joining the Cubs as bench coach, reported Rhett Bollinger at MLB.com two days ago
