I'm not a fan of prorating any of the bonuses but you definitely shouldn't prorate Silva's. It's not like the Cubs are going to account for the signing bonus that Seattle paid him originally.

Thank you for catching my mistake on Silva. I corrected it.

I use prorated bonuses for comparison purposes. USA today's database includes them as the union supplies them, and teams when they announce the budget also includes them.

Dempster had deferred 1.5 mill of last year's salary to this year, so he's making 15 mill this season, not counting his pro-rated bonus. I feel pretty safe in saying that if Theriot made 2.6 his first year of arb, Soto will be making 3 at a minimum. I also think Gorz and Marshall could be making more than what you listed for them, maybe around a mill or so combined. AZPhil has a pretty accurate assessment of Cubs payroll over at thecubreporter. We're basically sitting around 119 after we add in the entire 40 man with our current roster.

Deferred salaries are accrued to their original year, it's just a liability on the balance sheet.

Agreed on arby amounts, though Gorz is first year arb eligible so the increase won't be significant. I'll adjust.

It's actually Gorz's 2nd year of arb. He made 800,000 last year. But, as you said, it's not going to go up a ton. But, I could see him getting 1.5 or so anyway.

Current contract status:

A year or less?

Ramirez - 2012 club option for 16 mil or 2 mil buyout. NTC expired 2010 (1 mil more if traded), but has 5-10 rights

Fukodome - Free agent in 2012. 15 team no-trade list

Silva - 2012 mutual option for 12 mil or 2 mil buyout

Grabow - Free agent in 2012

Samadzija - Club options for 2012/13 for 3/3.5 mil. Under club control regardless of whether options are picked up. Full NTC for 2011

Wait till next next year?

Zambrano - Signed for 2012 for 18 mil. Full NTC. Earns 2013 player option for 19.3 mil if he's in the top 2 in Cy Young voting in 2011 or top 4 on 2012 and healthy at the end of 2012

Dempster - 14 million player option for 2012

Byrd - Signed for 2012 for 6.5 million

The gift that keeps on giving?

Soriano - Signed 2012 - 2014 for 18 mil each. Full NTC

If LCCF's figures are accurate, that puts them at roughly 130M for the 25 man roster.

Oh, I see he edited this morning. So that's about 125m for 16 guys and then you are just adding in assumed contracts for the last 9, right?

How much do we have left in the bank now? (Estimated)

If previous articles are any indication...nothing. We'd have to move salary to take on more salary, although I don't know if it would have to be in that order.

With five million of the ten owed to Carlos Pena deferred, we probably have three or four of that left to spend this year. If you assume that we're maxed out if you include the entire ten million figure.

Updated first post for Garza/Marshall/Wood/Soto/Hill signings and Gorzallany trade

just glancing at this, we need to modify to reflect that we aren't paying Pena 10 million this year, right?

Posted
I don't believe so. If the Cubs order 10,000 rolls of toilet paper today, but don't pay for it until next year; it's still an expense for the year. The liability is a balance sheet issue. When the Cubs file this seasons tax return, Pena is a 10 mil expense.

Time to keep this updated!

https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tt7HjIernphaSrv4wMWdUYg&output=html

Owed money but not under contract for 2012:

Carlos Silva, $2 million

Under contract for 2012:

Carlos Zambrano, $19 million

Alfonso Soriano, $19 million

Ryan Dempster, $14 million

Marlon Byrd, $6.5 million

Carlos Marmol, $7.0 million

Sean Marshall, $3.1 million

Arbitration eligible:

Matt Garza

Geovany Soto

Jeff Baker

Randy Wells

Blake DeWitt

Koyie Hill

Under team control but pre-arb (with the one exception, these guys will likely make less than $500k each):

Jeff Samardizija (can't get less than 80% of last year's $3.3 million salary)

Starlin Castro

Darwin Barney

Tyler Colvin

Andrew Cashner

James Russell

Anyone else in the minors

Total formally committed: $70.6 million for 6 players

Total including arbitration estimates and pre-arbs who will probably make the team: $95 million-ish for 18-20 players.

MLBTR posted a link with what they say are very accurate arbitration projections....here is the Cubs.

Cubs (6)

* Matt Garza - $8.7MM

* Geovany Soto - $4MM

* Randy Wells - $2.2MM

* Jeff Baker - $1.4MM

* Blake DeWitt - $1.2MM

* Koyie Hill - $900K

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/11/projected-arbitration-salaries.html#more

So, if we use these numbers and, for the sake of the discussion, peg Smardz at $2.64M (80% of 3.3), we're at $90.7M?
