Billy Butler

Rumors are starting to surface about him possibly being shopped because his price tag will increase. I know it goes against the Hendry M.O., but I would love for the Cubs to swing a trade with the Royals for Billy instead of overpaying for Adam Dunn.

I wonder what the Royals would want in the package? Surely a decent pitching prospect and position prospect but he shouldn't be extremely expensive.

if he were to cost too much in prospects, I'd rather try and finagle Kila Ka'aihue away from them instead. He's a bit older (26), and has had little success in the majors (because they seem hell bent on not giving him a chance to succeed in the majors) despite having tremendous success in the minors. He might be a possible buy low candidate, considering he's more or less blocked by Butler at 1B, if the Cubs choose to go the penny pincher route next season and avoid someone like Dunn.

But I would welcome Billy Butler to the team with open arms if we can swing it

Some LH power actually should be a priority for the team this year. We have the perfect position at which to fill both, and Butler provides neither.

Dunn at 3/30 >>>>>>>> giving up prospects for Billy Butler. The Royals will want Archer +.

For a middle of the pack 1B ( 13th out of 26 in wOBA)? No thanks.

I'm not saying we should go after Butler, but he is only 24 years old so I would imagine his numbers will improve.

Plus his power numbers would probably go up getting out of KC and the worlds largest ballpark.

Yeah, he could easily improve, but it's not like he needs to fill out. He's not a major candidate to add power.

yeah i know a lot of people say that the doubles will turn into home runs as a player matures, but isn't that more for guys who have a slighter frame? butler is already kind of a load. unless he adds loft to his swing he's not going to add much power.

LH power should never be a priority. The Cubs need good baseball players, no matter what side of the plate they stand on. If it so happens that the best player available hits RH, then you don't let him pass just because he doesn't hit lefty.

As for the rest, Dunn isn't going to be signed for 3/$30M. But no matter what he is signed for, it will probably be better than giving up top notch prospects for Butler. However, if another large salary isn't feasible for ownership then Butler is a very nice option, under team control for 3 more years, and young enough to get a lot better.

Good lord, of course I would rather have a RH .400 wOBA than a LH .360. If the numbers are the same, we could use the LH, that's all I'm saying. Throw in the fact that the LH in this case produces more and costs no prospects and it seems to be a no-brainer, even if he is older. His skill set isn't as likely to decline as some.

I can't believe I'm having to argue this side after all the debate a few years ago. I am very aware that handedness is of very little importance and it should never outweigh production. That doesn't mean it is completely irrelevant.

agreed, Kila Ka'aihue would be a shrewd move by Hendry if indeed the team goes cheap or invests heavily in a starter. what ever moves are made on offense we are still going to be left hoping that aramis has a bounce back year, colvin and castro continue improve and soriano doesn't get any worse.

If that's all you were saying, why didn't you say it. I don't know how the hell anyone was supposed to get that out of your earlier post. I apologize for apparantly not remembering your specific posts on a similar topic from 3 years ago.

Being around the Kansas City area and following the Royals pretty closely, I'd say there's a very slim chance of them trading Butler. The casual fan would go into an uproar.

Kila, on the other hand, could probably be picked up for not a whole lot. He hasn't been performing overly well since being called up this summer. Right now they are playing him at first and putting Butler in the DH spot. I'd love to see him on the Cubs next year if we can't get Dunn as somebody to fill in. I don't think he's been given enough time to get settled in, but the Royals haven't been the best at letting the youngsters play.

Why do my two favorite teams have to be the Royals and the Cubs? :(

Because you enjoy torture.

That must be true since I also cheer for the Chiefs and the Bears, but don't enjoy hockey so I couldn't even get any enjoyment out of the Stanley Cup.

I think they will move Billy at some point. Since they have a pretty good 1B coming behind him in Hosmer, plus Wil Myers who is probably gonna end up dhing or playing 1B. Why not get something in return for Billy before he gets more expensive?

I agree that they will eventually move Butler, but he is under team control until 2013 (I think). Considering the only draws they have right now are Butler, Greinke, and Soria I doubt they get rid of any of them next year. Hosmer will probably take over 1st, but I think Wil Myers will probably end up moving to a corner outfield spot.

Butler may be moved, but I can't see it happening until the end of 2011 or maybe even 2012 and by that point the Cubs would have better options through free agency if they don't sign Dunn.

Well you could be right, however if they want to maximize their return for Butler, now would be that time while he is still cheap and under team control. I would hope they learned from the Beltran fiasco that waiting until he's about to be a free agent will kill his return.

I agree. As a fan of both (more so towards the Cubs) I think this would be a good trade for both teams. I'm not sure who would be moving to the Royals in a trade like this, but I wish they would finally learn to maximize their value. I just don't see it happening.
