Can't believe the outright trammell dissing, but it is the Cobs.

Get ready for the sandberg era. At least we had this year to get ready for what will likely be an infuriating stretch of incompetence and stupid managerial moves along with significant clubhouse drama.

Quade is a funny interim manager, he could be ok since he is basically a no-name.

I'm not a Trammell guy, but the public dismissal by Hendry was completely unnecessary. Name Quade as the interim, tell AT of his disqualification in private and move on.

That whole sequence was quite awkward. But it's something that should be expected from Hendry by now.

If Ricketts bring back an [expletive] like Hendry, then the organization might be taking quite a few steps back. I guess we'll sit back and watch. . . . . uggghhhh.

It was depressing to see Lou leave the game on such a sour note with this horrible AAA team. I think he did a fine job,had a fine career, and will be harder to replace than many think. I wish him the best in his retirement.

It was depressing to see Nady attempting to play first after watching D Lee make it look easy for so many years.

It was depressing to watch Hendry publicly diss Alan Trammel.

There have been many years where the Cubs made me angry, but this year is just depressing. Poor Quade. Talk about a no win situation.

I wish Ryne Sandberg the best of luck next year, he will certainly need it.

It's like the Tribune all over again.

If Ryno manages we are all gonna need a lot of luck.

So how is being honest with Trammell up front a diss? People are overly sensitive, and apparently Trammell isn't too concerned because he decided to stay on until the end of the year.

If Quade is a candidate for manager next year, I like the fact that they are giving him a chance to finish out the season. We will find out very soon whether he has the same proclivities as Lou or how his lineups will work. The few days that Trammell managed in Lou's absence it felt like Lou hadn't left at all. It will be much easier for Quade to shake things up than it would have been for Trammell.

I don't believe Hendry disrespected Trammell at all. Making Quade the interim manager, after Alan had replaced Lou two other occasions this year, begged an explanation; which is why I think Hendry came out and said Trammell was being excluded from consideration. I could be wrong, but my guess is that they will be focusing more on finding a manager with direct connection (past or present) with the team and the city.

There's been a lot of local chatter about the manager needing to understand the Cubs' culture and the unique pressure that comes with leading a team/franchise that hasn't won in 102 years. Even though Lou played for, managed and GM'd the Yankees, many people think Lou (and Dusty before him) was ill prepared for the media, fans, pressure to win and general climate of "negativity" that follows the team (that's negativity/curse blah, blah, blah as expressed by both DLee and Lilly in their respective final interviews as Cubs).

Anyway, if I'm right that leaves Joe, Quade, Ryne, and possibly Brenly (long shot) as the top candidates with the bench coach Trammell void of enough Cub-ness for consideration.

If Hendry does it your way, there would be questions and speculation for the rest of the season. Quade as interim gives Hendry a look at a possible replacement as opposed to a lame duck for the rest of the year. Also, making it public now probably helps Trammel find a position for next year.

So long to Lou, although putting someone else in charge could make us play harder. On the other hand, it could mean that we're going to play rookies from here on out and Lou didn't want to do that? Technically, I guess it's possible anyway.

I thought it was weird how they handled Trammell. Not sure if he wanted it to come out that way and he's a complete lame duck at this point.

I'm not so sure Ryno is a lock to come here though. I don't think the Yankees would really care all that much if they lost Girardi personally. They can go get Donnie Baseball from the Dodgers if they want to.

In the end, since it's an open competition, I'm putting my vote behind Freddie Gonzalez, followed by Bobby V. Then, I guess I'd want Girardi, if we don't have to give him some megadeal to leave New York.

Is there any reason why people are so high on Trammel? I know nothing about him other than the fact that he looks like a good guy.

Personally, I like giving shots to guys who don't come with a ton of baggage in terms of being a "name" manager and all the ego and history that comes with it but do have at least some managing/coaching experience on the MLB level.

I think some of it goes back to his interim stint in 2007 during Lou's suspension (I think it was around 7 games). The Cubs were struggling under Lou and under .500 at the time. They went on a tear during Trammel's stint and kept it going the rest of the year. It may have been a coincidence, but if I recall the thinking at the time is that they seemed to be uptight under Lou but able to relax when Trammel took over for the stretch.

Trammell's a guy I like for a few reasons...

1) I think he got an unfair shake with the Detroit Tigers when he managed them a few years ago. He got a pretty piss-poor team along with a bunch of malcontents (see: Pudge Rodriguez) and basically was set up to fail. At the very least, he deserves a second chance.

2) Trammell apparently has a really good report with Starlin Castro and has been working with Castro fairly constantly. Trammell's gold gloves and defensive reputation make me think having him in the organization could be a boon to the various middle infielders on this team. I think Sandberg could offer comparable benefits, but Trammell has worked at the major league level for awhile now.

3) While part of me wouldn't mind seeing the Cubs completely clean house, there's something to be said for continuity with some of the coaches in the organization. Larry Rothschild is one of the best pitching coaches in baseball; I'd really hate to lose him. Rudy Jaramillo had a fantastic reputation prior to coming to the Cubs and I'd like to see what the team can do with him for another year. Keeping Trammell would likely mean both of those guys would be kept on board. I don't know if that would be the case with someone like Bobby Valentine or Fredi Gonzalez.

My gut feeling is that Ricketts has already told Hendry he wants Sandberg in there and the rest is a dog and pony show. Say what you will about Hendry but my impression is that he would never string a guy along he respects as much as Trammell if he knew there was no chance he could get the job. Since Quade is not going to get hired anywhere else anyway Hendry would just be able to tell him to have fun for 6 weeks with his dream job and if catches lightning in a bottle maybe he can steal the job away. Plus he is a real organizational guy so whatever Hendry tells him to do regarding what players to use, etc for evaluation purposes Quade will probably go along with.

On a side note, I can't believe that Lou and Trammell wasted the 2 weeks Soto was hurt playing Hill every day when they could have gotten an extended look at how Castillo can handle the big leagues.

They still owe Rudy a fair bit of money (completely independent of how inconsequential the actual hitting coach is, overall) and as you said, Larry is not only well-respected in his position, but he's entrenched there as well, and one would think there isn't going to be a huge turnover among the pitching staff for 2011.

Pursuant to all that, I would think any of their managerial candidates, especially Sandberg, will be told one or possibly even both of them come with the job.

Lou is a [expletive] coward. You helped created this ship wreck, you go down with the ship to the end

Yeah, [expletive] your mom, Lou.

Yeah!
