There's also been a rumor floating around for a week or two that Werth is/was banging Utley's wife.

How long has it been since Dave Martinez and /or Raphie Palmiero were doing Cindy Sandberg. I remember we traded Martinez to the Expos for Mitch Webster (I have one of his bats by the way -- long story)...I recall this trade was done in-season. Who did we get for Palmiero...did that involve Mitch Williams...I wanna say that trade was made in the off season?

Traded by Chicago Cubs with Jamie Moyer and Drew Hall to Texas Rangers in exchange for Mitch Williams, Paul Kilgus, Steve Wilson, Curt Wilkerson, Luis Benitez and Pablo Delgado (December 5, 1988).

Does anyone recall "Wild Things" first appearance with the Cubs? I believe it was Opening Day '89 vs Philly at Wrigley...Cubs were clinging to a lead (1-run ?)...enter Mitch the Bitch who proceeded to walk the the bases full, then strike out the next three batters (or something very close to that)...in any case, it was definitely a sign of things to come!! Love him or hate him, he always made things excited. Another of my favorite Wild Thing moments came in an Aug, 89 ? home (night) game vs. the Muts when Mitch blistered a multi-run 3B or HR off of David Cone in the 8th inning of a huge game. Anyone else happen to be at that game?!

I was in HS at the time, but I remember one of the teachers coming out to baseball practice to let me know what happened. We were both huge Cubs fans and he had to share the news with me.

If I recall correctly, Drew Hall was the Cubs top prospect at the time, also.

he gave up three straight singles. there probably was a time that he walked the bases loaded and then struck out the side, but it wasn't opening day against philly.

my favorite mitch williams moment was in a phillies uniform. they were playing a doubleheader with the padres and the first game had a ton of rain delays and ended up taking over 8 hours (though the actual game itself wasn't that long - just a regular 9 inning game). then for some reason the umps decided to start the second game - at 1:30 in the morning. it went to extra innings and mitch williams cracked an rbi single to win it in the 10th, at 4:40 a.m.

Supposedly rumor is untrue as Werth and Utley were recently spotted at the casino together.

Were they singing Go Cubs Go?

Underrated post.

The Phillies could wind up trading Jayson Werth for a "No. 4-type starter," according to ESPN's Buster Olney.

The Phils have reportedly been discussing a three-team trade involving Werth, but if that doesn't work out and they're unable to land either Roy Oswalt or Dan Haren, they could trade the outfielder directly for a lesser pitcher. It sounds like Philly is pretty desperate to move Werth and are trying various scenarios to get a deal done.

A #4 starter for Jayson Werth? Really?

Silva for Werth!

I'd kick in Wells, too. Get it done, Jimbo!

Werth is a FA after this season. I would not "kick-in" Wells.

What if it's just Wells? And if they're really desperate to move him, would they? I'd almost be inclined to trade them Wells just so we can let Werth walk and take the draft picks, assuming he'd be a Type-A

Having a cheap young SP, that has had ML success is worth more (to me) than 2 prospects that may never make it and a couple months of Werth.

Fair enough. Looking at his FanGraphs, seems he's been better than his numbers lead on (3.29 FIP) as well as a bit unlucky (.337 BABIP). Didn't realize that.

WTF are Cub fans doing craving Jason Werth?!? I thought everyone wanted Hendry to sell.

Type-A draft picks. If they're desperate and will take a #4 type pitcher for Werth, you can get Werth for an expendable pitcher you wouldn't mind parting with (who likely wouldn't be that great if he's a #4) and let Werth walk and take draft picks. I honestly don't care or not, but the thought did pop in my mind.

So the plan is to give up a #4 pitcher, spend a bunch of money this year on a guy that has no position, offer arbitration and risk being in the same situation all of next year, all for a couple draft picks that might not even be in the first 30 (assuming Werth remains a Type A despite a poor 2010)?

Seems a whole lot easier, cheaper and much less risky just to draft an extra overslot first-round talent or two in the 2nd-10th rounds.

Any trade I'd make would hinge on Werth signing an extention.

Just kicking the tires on trading a Silva for Werth and then cashing in on a pick in the offseason for Werth seems like a solid idea. I don't think the Phillies are thinking of Silva though when they say 4th pitcher for Werth.

Aren't the Phillies looking to dump salary by trading Werth? I was thinking that was the case and, if it is, that would make a Silva/Werth trade very much defeat the purpose.

Especially not if their motivation is to save money.
