I feel sorry for people that can't entertain absurdly optimistic projections of Castro's future.

Agreed...what fun is sports when you can't overrate the potential of your young stud players.

Except for Derrick Rose. Everything said about him by Bulls fans has, if anything, been underrating him. And that includes comparisons of him to various dieties.

For the record...

I think Starlin is going to have a great major league career. He has a ton of talent, and maturity will really bring that into focus. I think his defense will improve from toolsy to great. I think he will hit. a lot.

I just don't see a particular reason to think that power will be a standout part of his game.

I'm not sure anyone is saying otherwise. What we are saying is that it's incredibly exciting that he could potentially supplement his great contact skills and (flashes of) patience with average to above-average power.

This really stems from listening to Len and Bob talk about him developing power. I just don't see it happening. I'd gladly be wrong though.

Sorry folks, just a pet-peeve of mine. I'll shut up now.

I'm curious as to why you think a player who just turned 21 won't develop more power than he's displaying now.

he plays for the cubs, duh

You probably don't have to go as far back as I'd think, but who's the last Cub to triple twice in a game?

Mike Fontenot May 28th of last year against St. Louis.

Dunston had 3 once didn't he??

Charlie Hollocher, Ernie Banks, and Shawon Dunston all had 3 triples in one game for the Cubs.

I remember the Cubs hit three consecutive triples - Jerry Morales, surprisingly Dave Kingman and a third players whose name escapes me.

he will. just not A-rod power.

I'm not making myself clear apparently. I like Castro, I like his upside, I'm a fan, and I think he will improve. I just don't think power will be his best weapon.

How many people have been realistically talking like he's going to develop power a la one of the greatest HR hitters the game has ever seen? Or even that power will be his primary "weapon?" Most people here seem to talk about him like he's ideally going to end up being a guy that hits around 15 HR a season.

I don't know how many caveats and disclaimers I have to give.

If someone doesn't strike out hitters like Nolan Ryan, they're not a strikeout pitcher. It's as simple as that.

I just don't really even have a clear understanding as to who you're disagreeing with here.

How about zero, if you'd stop arguing against a point nobody is making?

I'm desperately trying to.

...what? How does that work? All you have to do is not argue the point that Castro isn't going to approach A-Rod numbers, which no one has disagreed with or is likely to, and you're done.

Sorry the last two posts were so short. I was posting from my phone on the run.

1. I've given several disclaimers in this thread and others that I'm not calling anyone out, arguing with anyone or claiming that anyone HERE is being ridiculous about his power potential.

2. I have specifically cited Len and Bob on WGN as annoying the crap out of me in their ravings about Castros potential power. ESPN is also to blame for the burr under my saddle.

3. I think the kid shows flashes of greatness and will be a solid to extraordinary player for years to come.

4. He's no Geovanny Soto.

5. I have heard A-rod and Griffey comparisons based mostly on his age and frame.

IN conclusion! I'm not arguing with anyone, but think that I have made a valid observation. I guess I just don't understand how your agreeing with my point invalidates it. I'm done.

Will resemble Nomar's power in his prime BOOK IT

pfft, im hoping for the second coming of arky vaughan!

I'll go one step further and say I hope Castro is a blend of Nomar/Arky... That's sounds like Derek Jeter, but with good-very good D with it...
