Who are you Louis Oosthuizen and why will you not go away? The condidtions are getting tougher all day and if Rory takes a step or two back you could have Louie with a 5 shot lead over Calcavecchia heading to the weekend just as I predicted. That's what makes The Open fun though.

What a bore.

 

Take the good with the bad. Sometimes, you get an amazingly interesting tournament. Other times, you get a total yawner with a total no-name winning.

 

Good chance that Oosthuizen goes on to have a career as successful as Todd Hamilton or Paul Lawrie.

they never acted bored when tiger woods was winning majors by ten strokes. to me it's more interesting when a no-name has the four days of his life and doesn't crack under the pressure than it is when by far the best golfer in the world plays like by far the best golfer in the world.

Not me. Then you know you're seeing greatness on top of it's game, completely dominating. This weekend you saw a guy with no track record greatly benefit from his early tee times and then play well on the weekend while everyone else was either too far back or went meekly.

 

Give it up for him, he was unflappable this weekend. But even as a fanatic of this tournament, I was completely deflated after Casey's triple and had a hard time staying awake for the last 3 holes.

Nowhere else to put this but Nick Watney is in a complete free fall today.

 

He was under 70 in each of his first three rounds (the only guy to do so) but is +9 through 12 today. He was -13 entering the round but might not even finish under par for the tournament. He double bogeyed 11 after going eagle-birdie-birdie on the hole in the first three rounds.

 

Since he's a good bet to throw up a score of 80+, I wonder when the last time a guy had three straight under 70 before an 80+ in the final round. He's also got a chance to post not just the worst round of the day (81 as of now) but the worst round of the tournament (83) and I'd be surprised if the leader has done the latter ever in the history of golf.

You are right that they shouldn't allow spectators to stand in it. But the rules regarding bunkers were clearly made available to him and was pasted on the wall in the clubhouse. Dustin said he didn't bother to look at them. The players in the clubhouse who were watching the coverage on TV were talking aloud saying that Johnson better not ground his club. Unfortunately he did.

Unfortunately he did.

 

It was pretty obvious that he did too. You can argue that it's a dumb course rule, and that's fair, but dumb or not...he should have known.

I don't watch much golf, but a couple buddies at work who do told me this morning that they were hoping he wouldn't ground his club.....and then he did it. I thought it was strange that anyone would think this was a bunker, but apparently plenty of people did.

 

Sucks that something like that decides the fate of an entire tourney though.

The idea behind the rule is that you aren't supposed to be able to test the "firmness" or condition of the hazard by putting your club on it.

The idea behind the rule is that you aren't supposed to be able to test the "firmness" or condition of the hazard by putting your club on it.

 

That and you could possibly knock over some of the sand in back of the ball on a buried or bad lie on your follow through and make better contact. You can also get a little more balance by grounding the club, but in reality grounding the club does little to affect the shot.
