Thanks to CubsinNC for posting first about it:

Peoria Journal-Star[/url]"]There likely will be a roster move coming for the Chiefs after pitcher Trey McNutt packed equipment bags bound for Daytona after the game.

Looking at Peoria's roster, it appears Manolin De Leon has taken the vacated roster spot.

From the Smokies twitter, Jackson and Dolis are headed to Tennessee, Ty Wright is headed to Iowa, and Oswaldo Martinez is going to Daytona.

I know Dolis is repeating Daytona but I think Archer and Rusin would be more deserving.

I'll be interested to watch McNutt at this level. He's dominated the lower levels when he's been there, and a performance equal to those levels at Daytona has to put him in the top echelon of Cubs prospects, and likely earn him a spot in Tenn next year.

From what I read he added velocity this year, from what the pre draft scouting reports said. From watching what little of him I saw, I'd say composure wise he's all there. But stuff wise, where does his stuff actually translate? Are we looking at a good 2-3, or are we looking at someone who likely will be a middle relief/setup/closer type?

Maybe I'm skeptical/pessimistic, but I'd like to see Rusin there the full year to make sure he's at the appropriate level. From college to a few games in Boise, to Daytona, I want to believe, but I'd like to see a good full season, let him open in Tenn next year, and maybe promote him then, mid season, if needed to AAA.

I know that's somewhat a double standard compared to McNutt, but I am wrong in assuming that the talent jump from low-A to high-A, is much smaller than high-A to AA?

But Dolis vs. Archer? You could argue either way, I suppose.

The general wisdom is that the jump from A+ to AA is the biggest one in the minors.

The pre-draft reports depended a lot on when teams saw him. Early in his season, he was working in the high 80s and looked really lackluster. Most teams backed off of him, although the Cubs kept an eye on him. As his season went on, his stuff improved markedly and the Cubs were able to snag him late.

Much like Cashner last year, a lot of McNutt's success depends on how well he can develop his changeup. McNutt has a fastball/curveball combination that could easily translate to success as a setup man. If he adds a changeup and keeps his stuff at a high level deep into the season, he could very well be a high quality 2/3 starter.

The main reason to see Rusin promoted is that Rusin is much older and more experienced: McNutt was drafted after one year in junior college while Rusin was drafted as a senior out of an SEC school.

Now I have something to look forward to when Tennessee comes back to Carolina. Unfortunately I don't think that's until the final series of the season (or at least close to it).

According to the BA Handbook, the Cubs lucked out with McNutt. Their area scout had quit and the Cubs waited a long time in replacing him. When someone finally came to see McNutt, his velo had improved from upper 80's to lower 90's.

Agree that the Dolis promotion, rather than Rusin or Archer, seems surprising.

Two hypotheses:

1. Dolis has pitched effectively enough, but he's typically been better early and his stuff seems to deteriorate after a couple of innings. He doesn't have the K-stuff or the pitch efficiency to be a starter, so they're ready to finally move him to his eventual home, relief. If they don't want to add a starter to Tenn, then Archer and Rusin up as starters.

2. The other possible logic is that Archer is in a groove, he's got a pitching coach who's got him rolling, and they just don't want to mess with his success. Let him stay locked in.

Craig, I was thinking the same thing about Dolis going to the pen. No SP was promoted from Tennessee to Iowa (and ABD and Chen are both deserving).

I'm pretty certain that Dolis is under the Ceda plan from a couple years back. If he moves to the pen as anticipated, I wouldn't be surprised if he sees a September call-up since he has a 40 spot.

Now I'm hearing that ARcher and Shafer have also been promoted, Carbrera and Maestri sent to Daytona.

Confirmed

I didn't realize how good of a season Shafer was having this year. Any reports on his stuff?

I have always thought and heard that as well. But according to Daytona Cubs manager Buddy Bailey, he believes the biggest jump may be from Low-A to High-A. Take it for what it's worth. He has managed at about every minor league level.

I don't think it's worthy of it's own thread, but Mota was promoted to Daytona from Peoria. With Daytona having 2 catcher only players does this spell the end of the Mota behind the plate experiment? Or are the Cubs thinking he'll get better instruction from Buddy over Casey? I'm excited about him, if he can stick at catcher, and he is athletic enough to possibly move positions, but isn't his bat much less valuable at the probable position swaps?
