Atkins up/Russell down

#Cubs new addition Mitch Atkins was 4-2 with 2.63 ERA in 14 G (6 starts) with 33 Ks in 48 innings pitched. This is second callup for RHP

Not sure whose going to get sent down. The only reason I could see this move being sense is if its for a temporary callup to get a fresh arm in the bullpen.

Yep, moving about the 11th best option in the organization to the major league rotation would be about right for this season.

From the sounds of it, Atkins is going to the bullpen. I'd rather have someone like Atkins in the bullpen than calling up Jackson.

I posted about this in the Minor League section because I wasn't sure if it was true. TCR tweeted about this almost an hour ago. They speculate Wells may go down.

Thatsv kind of dumb. If anything move Gorz to the rotation and Wells to the pen. My guess is that Russell goes down though. He's been pretty good for the most part but bad yesterday and I believe had one more recent bad outing and knowing Lou, that's probably enough to send him down. Then again, there's also the chance that thyere working on a Gorzalanny trade. If they were looking for a starter, there's no way that even our organization picks Atkins over Gorz, Diamond, or Jackson.

I don't understand why you're so insistent to move Wells to the bullpen. He has options, so send him to the minors to start and hopefully figure out what's been going wrong.

Maybe that's just where we'll need him in the near future. Cashner and Jackson and maybe Diamond all deserve cinsideration for the 2011 rotation. Z and Dempster are locks, and Silvas likely too. We also have Gorz, leaving a rotation logjam. IMHO all are better options than Wells, and certainly Atkins.

I'm not completely against calling up a lesser prospect since the team isn't going anywhere and you can save someone from starting their MLB clock.

Cashner's already on the major league team. And starting Thomas Diamond's clock is not a concern to me.

While the clock might be a concern with Jay Jackson, with Thomas Diamond, I wouldnt really be worried about starting his. Diamond is 27 or 28 years old and not getting any younger. Also, Im not sure how minor league free agency works, but how long is he even under team control? If inly for a year or 2, isnt it best to at least see what he can do rather than atkins who we already know is mediocre at best? Now if they are looking for a reliever, Atkins is the way to go rather than waste another one of our starting prospects, but for a starter, Id rather Diamond.

That doesn't explain why it would be a better idea to move him to the bullpen instead of the minors.

My guess is also Russell; Not just because he had a rough outing but because they may need a fresh arm. I don't think Silva will go deep if it's as hot and humid as expected (85 degrees is forecast this afternoon and the wind may be blowing out). I think Silva only lasted 5 or so innings in TX which would be the most recent start that closely mirrors today's expected game time conditions.

Russell was optioned but Atkins flight was delayed because of rain so he hasn't arrived yet per Muskat.

Gotta love that the Cubs have chosen Grabow over Russell, who has actually gotten hitters out this year. Atkins will be here about a week, and the its the return of John [expletive] Grabow. God damn this organization is horrible.

It's the best long-term decision. Russell has gotten pretty lucky and still has mediocre numbers for the season. Grabow's likely the better pitcher. And you really want to be sure before you release a relief pitcher that has more than a year left on his contract because they bounce around from awful to good again so much and the Cubs could easily get some contract relief by next year.

The best long term solution would be not handing out 3 year deals worth over 7mil to average left handed relievers.

This is true, but irrelevant at this point. Grabow's on the roster and, thus, CCP is right - let Grabow pitch in place of Russell and see if he can build some trade value (which he will if he performs close to what he's done the past couple of years).
