It's one of two options at this point

1) Sign Niemi and trade him because we can't make 2.75 work

2) Sign Turco who is rumored to already been in negotiations/verbal agreement/close to signing at 1 year 1.75

Niemi can think his agent when he's playing in Edmonton next year.

I think Kyle Beach just made this team.

Very interested to see what happens with Niemi now. I still think he goes to San Jose, especially since Setoguchi signed for such a small deal.

Official. Niemi walking, Turco signed. Looks like 1.75 which is great. :yahoo:

I wonder if Niemi will talk with San Jose now. Would be ironic since it was their offer that pushed the price up on Hammer slightly more than the Hawks wanted that ultimately contributed in us losing Niemi

I originally thought that was the point of offering Hammer so much. So they could either get Hammer or Niemi. But since they didnt offer Niemi anything after hammer was matched maybe that wasnt the case.

The Score reporting the hit is between 1-1.5 which would be amazing. Basically ensures Beach is a Hawk if he earns it plus gives us even a bit more wiggle room

They'll count on Crawford as much as any team uses their backup. Health issues not withstanding, he'll probably get 20ish starts

I wonder if they'd try and play him more frequently though. Turco is old, and if they are thinking beyond next year they probably want to see if Crawford is worth bringing back.

Yea, I was just thinking that. Maybe pushing Crawford starts up to the 25-28 range.

Here's fun food for thought, if Turco's contract really is that cheap it's possible Kyle Beach will be making more than our #1 goalie

Terms of Turco's deal aren't yet known, but his agent, Kurt Overhardt, said it is for somewhere between $1 million-$1.5 million. That is significantly lower than the $2.75 million an arbitrator awarded Niemi on Saturday and gives the Hawks some salary cap relief.

"(Turco's) a guy who's made a lot of money in his career," Overhardt said. "He was the highest-paid goalie at one point other than (Nikolai) Khabibulin. We kind of set the market last time around. Now the priority is winning and being with a winning organization. Our priority ... was to put him with a club where he had a chance to play a role to win the Stanley Cup."

i'd rather have turco, and they'll go with turco. and if i were him, i'd be super-excited to get a chance to play behind our defense. he might put up a sub 2 GAA again. i'd take a pay-cut for another chance at immortality.

niemi could make a lot of money playing behind seabrook/keith campbell/toftbo. if he goes anywhere else, he'll be exposed and lose big.

which is why it was important we snagged turco so cheaply. now we can use crawford as our backup instead of toivonen. i really do not feel toivonen will ever be a #2 in the nhl.

The Hawks are cutthroat (and that's a compliment). So many teams across professional sport would have valued sentimentality over the financial and resigned Niemi, in my opinion. This was obviously the correct business move, and possibly the correct on-ice move as well. Kudos.

Nice. They could even go with Leddy now.

I'd imagine Niemi gets more than the 2M the Hawks offered, so I don't see how his agent overvalued him.

They wanted 4 million at the hearing while the Hawks just signed a goalie with comparable (in some cases) better numbers for 1.3 million. How is that overvalue?

If I had to bet, he's going to sign for less per year than 2.75 otherwise I think the Hawks would have signed and traded him at that number. Whatever teams that are interested in him have to believe they can do better than that number. The market on goalie's contracts is down.

i don't know. i think they played themselves out of a sure thing.

It's doubtful he has to settle for a garbage contract now. They said from day one Niemi may be more comfortable not being in Chicago anyway.

They offered 4M at the hearing, it didn't mean they were expecting it. You seem to think he should've signed with the Hawks for 2M. If he gets more than that on the open market then the agent played it right. (financially speaking)

You are assuming a team would rather trade for him and paying him 2.75m than not trade for him and sign for 2.76m. He could get more simply by that team not having to trade anymore. Plus, as long as it's more than 2m it's more than the Blackhawks wanted him at.
