one of you soccer guys explain to me please what a soccer coach actually does during a game. Obviously they talk shop during halftime and they make decisions on subs during the game, but other than that, what do they really do? They don't appear to be close enough to shout plays like in basketball.

Not plays, just tactical decisions. And lots of yelling at the officials.

but how do they make tactical decisions on the field? just shout at one of their guys whenever they run past?

See if I can do this again today. This time red card in the 79th minute and by Higuain.

Mascherano in the 83rd.

Halfway there, Javier. Do it.

So do you think the Ballack injury has helped this German team?

They have certain players they mostly communicate with. Most of the time they are just yelling the same way we yell at the tv, but they will change up the tactics through out the game change formations, drop off a certain player mark up a certain player, tell someone to exploit a certain side of the field.

I actually thought Germany was going to struggle a bit this year. Klose getting up there in age. A lot of young guys who had to step into bigger roles. The goaltending was a question mark and then Ballack's injury. Didn't think they'd be this good, that's for sure.

Ive got a new one, Maradona in the 91st minute for attacking the 4th official.

14 goals for Klose and he's got two more games (semi and either the final or third place game) to pass Ronaldo's 15.

Very unlikely, but after tomorrow its possible we won't have any South American teams left in the WC. With that said I think Uruguay wins.

Yeah, that was the thing about the potential for all four semifinalist to be from South America - they all could lose as well. Hopefully Uruguay is the only one to make it.

Haha suck it, South America.

Yep. And even though Europe didn't have the best group stage of the Cup, only had six in the Round of 16 and three in the quarters (both the fewest ever), they're looking likely to have three of the four semifinalists as long as Spain doesn't choke.

EDIT: And if Spain wins, Europe will make it 15 straight Cups with at least one team in the final.

Also of note, no European team has won a World Cup not staged on the continent.

I think that changes this year.

Yes. He would have slowed them down. As much as I have loved Ballack for what he's done for the DFB, he was a square peg in a round hole at this point. I think he was millstone for both Chelsea and the DFB this year, though believe (and hope) he'll be very good for Leverkusen.

Germany has outscored their opponents 13-2 so far this Cup. And they lost once.

And the loss was an extremely impressive performance, in my book. They completely took it to Serbia despite being down a man.

Paraguay had better score because Spain's going to pick them apart if they keep pushing up like this.

damn that was really close. i think he was onside

The question is do you consider the other Paraguay player involved in the play, because he was certainly offside. He didn't touch the ball, which isn't required to be offside, but he did go up for a header.

Good point. That's a tough one.

Pique couldn't have been more obvious with that hold.

Even though I'm rooting for Spain, it's good to see a ref finally call that.

And a huge save from Casillas.

Good to see a ref have the balls to call that.

But I think this 2nd one was questionable.
