to be fair, how many world cups have been played anywhere but Europe or South America?

Five away from both, but there have been plenty in South America too.

Europe has won 9 of 10 Cups played in Europe and none of the eight played anywhere else - four in South America, three in North America and one in Asia.

Since they expanded to 32 teams, 4 have been in Europe, 2 in North America, 1 in Asia, and 1 in Africa.

Since they expanded to 32 teams, there have been just the 2 in Europe, 1 in Asia and 1 in Africa. USA 1994 was still 24 teams (The US advanced despite being 3rd in their group).

I wish that goal had come a few minutes earlier just to make for a really frantic last five minutes or so.

5 1/2 minutes into the 3 minutes of extra time, the ref finally blows the whistle....,.

Considering there was an injury during injury time, and a yellow for time wasting, it was right to give additional time.

Wikipedia lied to me and said it expanded in 1982.

Wiki says it expanded to 24 in 1982 and to 32 in 1998.

I'm just going to assume you edited it to say that to make me look stupid.

Hard to say whether Van Persie was involved in the play.

He tried to kick the ball so he's certainly involved in the play. He was more involved than the Paraguay guy who went up for the header against Spain and was rightly called offside.

I don't think that was clearly offside either. His leg was past the last defender but the rest of his body was even when the ball was kicked. The ref could have called offside but I don't think Uruguay got screwed.

On the replay, the ball first deflected off of a Uruguay defender; I don't think there was an offside there.

The deflection doesn't affect the offside call because its not possession by the other team.

Germany/Netherlands would be so, so epic.

Either would have a great draw for a Cup final that hasn't been seen in recent memory. Either someone's winning it for the first time, or two hated rivals go at it.

It's clearly offsides in the replays.

The offside rule was fairly recently updated by FIFA. If any part of the body that can play the ball (head, legs, chest) is offsides, then you are offsides. They used to basically use the trunk of the body, but they had to make it more difficult and complicated. Since the leg was off, he's off. The only question would be when the ball was played.

FWIW, the Dutch desperately want to win it against Germany. 8-)
