Nice goal by Japan. They look pretty good, all in all.

first half was pretty boring... japan had the only real good scoring chance and they potted it. cameroon has looked surprisingly mediocre so far.

Sounds like an entertaining finish to this game. I'm only listening to it on ESPN Radio online, but what a win this could be for Japan.

And congrats to Japan. First ever World Cup win outside of Japan.

yeah, cameroon started pushing the last 15 minutes but they were sloppy the entire match. japan's goalie made a great save in stoppage time but it didn't look like it mattered - i think a foul was called on cameroon just earlier. cameroon needs to beat denmark and probably grab at least one point off of netherlands now.

if japan makes it through as the second team from that group (assuming netherlands is first), that would be a really easy second round matchup for the winner of group f.

really looking forward to italy-paraguay this afternoon (go paraguay) and ivory coast-portugal tomorrow.

Yeah, the announcer said that Eto'o was whistled for the foul, though they couldn't tell until after the play had stopped.

I have to laugh at the notion that those horns are part of their culture.

Thank you. I actually just said the same thing to a buddy over IM. They're cheap plastic trinkets. They're as much culture as a rally towel.

I wouldn't mind seeing Nigel De Jong get injured on a tough tackle at some point.

After breaking Holden's leg with the cheap tackle in the friendly, he had a couple more cleats up tackles today before finally getting a yellow card late in the first half.

If anyone watches him more frequently, is this a part of his game - the reckless tackles?

I hope the Italians get zero points in the group.

agreed. i hate them with a passion.

i was in florence during euro 2000 when france scored during extra time to tie it and then a golden goal by trezeguey to win. we went out for gelato after the game and there was a guy in an italy jersey looking depressed and kicking an empty can down the street. it was glorious.

Can Italians even remain upright when the grass is wet?

Like the pasta they are so famous for.

It's a shame that Italian football and Olive Garden have ruined the great impression I once had of Italian culture growing up watching the Super Mario Bros. Super Show.

lol @ de rossi. the italians are such a joke.

Hate that guy.

This is why FIFA needs to dole out yellow cards after matches for blatant dives (as well as taking yellow cards away for dives that weren't). The NBA will rescind technicals and change flagrant foul calls after the fact so I don't see what would be so wrong about doing a similar thing in soccer.

the problem with doing this is that italy probably wouldn't be able to field a team after the first round.

Paraguay keep giving it up too cheaply in the middle. If they keep it up, it'll eventually cost them. And we don't want that.

That's not a problem.

Yellow cards are much more common than techs or flagrants, and playing with a yellow changes your play and therefore the course of a game much more than having a technical(which the vast majority of the time just forces you to stop arguing with the official).
