Absolutely ridiculous approach by Soriano with Nady on 3rd with one out. He decided he was swinging at the first pitch no matter where it was. The mental approach this team has with a runner on 3rd base is so stupid it is comical at this point.

And to the earlier question, no Byrd would not have been anywhere near the ball the got past Colvin. It was a gap shot to left center and it would have been a back handed attempt by Byrd. Colvin may be the fastest player on the team and has done nothing to show he can't handle any outfield position, so why do people think Byrd is a better outfielder? The fact that any defensive metric makes Theriot seem like a good shortstop should make everyone question them.

The approach this team has at all times is comical. Whether it's cutting down on their swings with 2 strikes, hitting the ball where it is pitched, swinging at the first pitch after a 4-pitch walk, it's all just bad. And has been bad for the majority of my life as a Cubs fan, except for 2008, when they reverted back to form in the postseason.

I wonder if there are still people who believe that 2008 wasn't a fluke.

sOPS+ measures performance relative to the rest of the league within a particular split. Think of it as OPS+ for specific situations alone.

The Cubs sOPS+ with 2 strikes is 133.

The Cubs sOPS+ with a runner on 3rd < 2 outs is 110.

How could anyone argue it wasn't a fluke? Please point out where people here have argued otherwise.

Yes, I'm going to meticulously search through 50,000 posts to try to find a few that back up my opinion.

Well, it just seems like an odd conclusion to take. Why would someone still be arguing that it wasn't an outlier season?

There are some Cubs fans who never take the rose-colored glasses off.

2008 was a hell of a lot of fun, don't get me wrong, but it just adds to the frustration. We did it then, why can't we do it now?

This is a really interesting discussion you're having, but it has absolutley nothing to do with tonight's game. If you want to pursue it further, CUBS Discussions Forum would be a real good place.

Thanx.

But the game thread has a chance of getting to 4 pages tonight...

What? It's a tangent from the game and it's a discussion about the Cubs. Are the game threads only going to consist of updates as to what happens in the game?

There's probably a good reason for that.

Agreed. I responded to one of Raw's posts and we had a discussion from there. I don't see how it's different from any other discussion that breaks off from game thread discussions.

But, to keep the peace, i will stop.
