erik makes a good point, if hanley wants to be a jerk, there a lots of players itching to get through the door and play everyday.

granted, those players will probably contribute similar defense and 1/8 the offense of hanley, and therefore lose games that the marlins should've won, but it'll be awesome to stick it to hanley the olde tyme way.

The players have to be held accountable for their actions, and crap like this needs to be stopped ASAP. We all saw what happened when Dusty lost control of the team. No manager should ever let it get to that point.

Hanley loafed, was punished, spoke out against his manager and is now going to apologize. Hopefully the Marlins handled it internally.

And you have to treat Hanley like anyone else and can't give him special treatment because of his abilities. Are the same people who think this the same people who crucified Sammy for leaving early on the last day of the '04 season?

Why? It helps you more in the long run if you do.

no

But essentially what is the difference?

Leaving early was seen as "giving up on your team", even though it was the last day of the season and the Cubs were mathematically eliminated. Sammy was still a superstar player, and he was crucified for it.

Hanley almost walking after that ball is giving up on the play, therefore hurting your team in a game that matters. Yet he shouldn't face the same criticism? How is his offense any better than Sammy's?

So what ever happened with this? I'm too lazy to look it up. Did he play the next day?

Headline was he apologized to team then went out an played well.

I think the Marlins probably handled this appropriately.

Possibly...I'd still have tasered him though.

if i were ramirez i would be like, "did it have to be the worst two players in the hall-of-fame?"

no one is baseball honestly realizes how much of baseball is skill and talent and how little is hustle.

From everything I've read about this incident, it was the culmination of Hanley acting above the team, not just this one time. Either way, he was wrong and shouldn't be treated better than any one else on the team.

Yes, he's talented. But he can't win every game by himself.

so you think it's acceptable for a player to quit on a play whenever he wants, as long as he's a great player?

handle it behind closed doors, don't approach him in the dugout in full view of every video camera in the stadium. tell him guys look up to him and he needs to try harder next time. this whole "you need to apologize to everyone whose lives you ruined" is junk. that jerk manager made this into more than it needed to be because he wanted a little attention.

if he felt so upset about it, he could have handled this like that blue jays manager handled lilly, waiting for him in the stairway to fight him, and then he could have gotten beaten up, just like that manager and everything would be even.
