Hanley Ramirez benched for not hustling

Surprising, but it looks like the manager was fed up with him.

Last year's NL batting champion, Ramirez committed a costly error in the second inning after Tony Abreu's looper dropped near him in short left field. The star shortstop accidentally kicked the ball about 100 feet toward the left-field corner and loafed after it, allowing two runners to score as Abreu advanced to third.

I'm going to guess that in an amazing feat of strength, Hanley could have lept 100 feet and scooped the ball and threw it home in one instantaneous motion and prevented anyone from advancing 1 base, let alone score.

Was it laziness or was it a play he gave up on thinking that there was basically no way to stop 2 guys from scoring after you just kicked a ball all the way to the outfield corner? He prevented Abreu from scoring, which is probably the logical outcome I would have guessed might happen if you posed the question "what happens if.....".

Sarcasm in wondering how many runners Gonzalez expected Ramirez to keep from scoring on that play.

keeping the guy at 1st from scoring and stopping the batter at 2nd was certainly within reason. maybe his knee was hurting, but he was running a heck of a lot slower trying to chase down the ball than he was when he was running after the pop-up.

Considering there were defenders close enough to the ball to keep the runners from taking off, I don't think it's unreasonable to say that hustling could've kept the 2nd run on 3rd.

It's his team. He can do whatever he *fornicating* wants."

"We've got a lot of people dogging it. They never pull guys."

"We've got 24 more guys out there. Hopefully, they can do the same thing I can."

When initially asked about Gonzalez's actions, Hanley answered: "Who?"

Fredi, he was told.

"Who's that?"

Your manager.

"Oh, yeah..."

*that's not really what he said*

did you watch the play? it was the most blatant lack of effort i've ever seen from a baseball player. i don't care how hard the foul ball hit his foot. he was clearly dogging it, which isn't new for hanley.

by the way, this isn't new for hanley. apparently he's on his way to mannyland. uggla called him out hard in the clubhouse last year too and apparently he has a habit of doing this type of stuff.

and i don't see how anybody can watch the video of the play and side with hanley. i'm NOT the type of fan that complains about hustle often, but that was ridiculous. i don't see how hanley can be mad about being pulled for the game. that was embarrassing.

oh, and his performance on the field hasn't been as good this season as it's been in the past either. he has like an .850 ops and has pretty mush stopped trying to steal bases
