Magic chimes in:

Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson said he never would have joined with Larry Bird to win a championship the way LeBron James is teaming with Dwyane Wade.

"We didn't think about it cause that's not what we were about," said Johnson, whose Michigan State squad beat Bird's Indiana State team in the 1979 National Collegiate Athletic Association championship. "From college, I was trying to figure out how to beat Larry Bird."

Kareem and James were also trying to figure this out.

oscar robertson and kareem were also pretty successful in milwaukee.

I think you missed my point.

I don't think it needs to be as big of a deal as these people are making it, but it is awesome to see all these greats basically ripping Wade and James for teaming up together. They can be as cocky as they want to but that has to hurt them a little hearing people like Jordan and Magic publically decry this arrangement.

chris paul is demanding a trade. superteam II coming?

I'm going to cry, and tape myself crying, and then post the video of me crying on NSBB if he goes to the Knicks.

You'd prefer that he go to the Magic or Lakers?

Edit: Actually, it would be pretty funny if he went to the Lakers, and Lebron would end up destroying his legacy and still never winning a championship.

Keep him in the West. Bulls are screwed if he goes to Orlando and probably screwed if he ends up in NY with Melo and Amare.

I don't know why everybody is convinced that Melo is going to NY. He's not leaving Denver.

Completely different situation. Melo isn't a free agent. And won't be until after a forthcoming lockout. He has no idea how much money he'll be able to get after that after whatever the new CBA says....

He has an extension offer on the table in Denver. He'll take the sure thing.

Will he? I don't think any of us know that. It's not really safe to assume that the athlete will make the logical decision after what we've seen over the last couple of weeks. That's not even a slight at LeBron but more so a guy like Richard Jefferson, declining his $15 million player option, only to return to the same team at a far reduced rate.

Plus, 'Melo has a New York state of mind!

What RJeff did made sense. He turned $15 million in guaranteed money to I think $38 million in guaranteed money. With the CBA expiring after this season and 2 disapointing seasons in a row under his belt, there was no guarantee that he was making anywhere near $38 million in his next contract.

What assets do the Knicks possibly have that even interest the Hornets? They gutted themselves, draft picks and all, for LeBron. They have Amar'e and Gallinari and scrubs.

They got 3 decent/cheap players in the Lee S&T deal with Golden State (Randolph, Turiaf, Azubuike). They have picks and Eddy Curry's expiring contract too. For a team like the Hornets that would go into full bore rebuilding mode if they ever traded Paul, it's not bad actually. You want young, cheap assets in that scenario.

Edit: They also have the room to absorb Okafor's bad deal and Raymond Felton as well.

Those picks get a hell of a lot less valuable if you're giving them a superteam. Are expiring contracts are going to have the same value they used to given the uncertainty of the new CBA?

Well Melo won't be in the fold until next year at the earliest so you'll have one decent pick and one low one probably...depending on how good you think Paul alone makes them this year.

They have the two second rounders from the Lee trade, but that's it for the next two years. I wouldn't necessarily call Turiaf or Azubuike decent. They're replacement level players.

So, really, their assets are Gallinari and Randolph, an expiring deal, and cap space to absorb a bad contract.

What is the cap space (from Curry's expiring + dumping a slug) going to do for New Orleans? Who's going to want to go play for the one of the worst teams in the NBA in a not so great market.

I thought that the Knicks don't have their 1st rounder for like 3 of the next 5 years or something.

Edit: Just looked it up. Houston has the right to swap their 1st round pick with New York's next season, unless the Knicks pick is #1 overall. They also don't own a 2nd round pick next season. In 2012, they owe Houston their 1st rounder, but it's top 5 protected.

Assuming getting CP3 would keep the Knicks out of the lottery, they wouldn't be able to trade a 1st round pick until 2014 (because the new rule about trading consecutive 1sts)

Then why hasn't he taken it yet?
