Truffle, I definitely recognize that the Flyers are much better than their regular season record indicates. I remember how hyped they were a couple season ago with tons of young talent. They will give the Hawks a tough series. While I am glad to have seen them come out of the East instead of Washington or Pittsburgh, I think the Flyers were probably the 3rd least team I wanted to face coming into the playoffs (yes over NJ).

No, NJ's trap style would have been disastrous.

the problem is, they didn't play it as well as they had in the past, kovalchuk has no commitment to defense whatsoever, and brodeur just isn't as good as he was in his prime. he was outplayed by boucher and looked very average in the playoffs (actually in the whole second half of the season). the devils weren't really that good.

Absolutely, but we all saw how the Hawks fared against a trapping team in the first round of the playoffs. I'm not going to discredit you guys at all because the Flyers are a talented bunch, especially with the first two defensive pairings. I just think from a pure matchup perspective, I would've hated to face New Jersey.

i actually really like that it's two teams who don't have great goalies. it always annoyed me when one decent team rides a hot goalie to the finals. the hawks have a great mix of scorers, talented two-way scorers (hossa, toews), decent offensive players who have great defensive skills (bolland, madden) and checkers, plus a deep and strong defensive corps. the flyers have good scoring depth up front with some very good defensive forwards, plus four defensemen who have basically been playing half the game each. the hawks have certainly been the best TEAM in the playoffs and the same is true for the flyers. there's no j-s giguere here.

I'm rooting for Chicago in the series even though I think it would be hilarious for Hossa to lose in the Stanley Cup Finals three years in a row with three different teams.

Milford is where the Bluth's went to school and were never seen or heard. He called the Marleau line the Bluth brothers.

Yeah, I got the reference, just though I missed the chock full.

After weeks of speculating, it is expected that Steve Yzerman will be named as the new general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning today. According to a number of media reports, there will be a press conference this afternoon to make the formal announcement.

WOW!!!!!

I always thought of Stevie Y as a Red Wing lifer, so him taken a GM job with the Lightning is kinda of surprising to me.

Are we safe to lock this thread, and just put the hockey discussion in the Blackhawks thread now? Anyone have a compelling argument to keep this thread open?

Eh...Truffle's already all up in the Hawks thread...but that's cool...just thought we could consolidate.

at this point i'll just take not getting swept. it's funny, i feel ok about how we've played the first two games - too many defensive breakdowns in game one and the hawks finished their chances remarkably well (plus leighton sucks), and then tonight we had easily more scoring chances but leighton let up a joke goal and niemi was terrific. much like the sharks we're showing that we're not far behind the hawks, but we're going to lose the series by a pretty lopsided margin.

I have been surprised about how well Philly has played with the Hawks. They certainly have not been outplayed, except at goalie.

just a question because the announcers never mentioned it - was there ever a whistle on that play? because clearly the puck didn't cross the line originally, but niemi also never covered the puck cleanly and carter poked it in. if there was no whistle, shouldn't that have been ruled a good goal?

obviously it doesn't matter, i'm just curious.

i never heard a whistle but it did get extremely loud after the puck rolled along the line. that's where i'm sure the "intent to blow" rule comes into play.

Yeah...and it wasn't just extremely loud...the goal horn blew. I'm sure the intent to blow rule was what was going on there.

okay thanks, i wasn't aware of that rule. i'm sure the ref lost sight of the puck when niemi tried to cover it so it would make sense that he wouldn't have thought it was live when carter poked it in. that goal judge seemed a bit quick on the trigger finger.
