Here's a hockey question I've been wondering for a while. Can someone explain to me why scoring was so much higher in the 80's than it is now with the post-lockout rule changes? Is it just better goalies or better goalie equipment? Is there still that much more trapping than there was?

i think better goalie technique and better goalie equipment have a lot to do with it. watching classic hockey games from the 70s and 80s, giving up a goal on unscreened shot from the top of the circles was not considered a softie back then. now it is. the area of open net to shoot at looks much larger 20-30 years ago than today.

interference was interference, just another huge change

seed-wise, is this the worst Eastern Conference Final ever? Or at least in a long time?

Considering that its the 7 and 8 seed, and therefore automatically the worst (seed-wise) possible, yes.

lol whoops

oh and lol @ mark recchi:

That's a terrible call. In a 3-3 series in a Game 7, you don't make that call. It was a terrible call. Terrible judgment [on the linesman's] part.

apparently because it's game 7 you ignore the rules of hockey and allow one team to play with an extra player on the ice. come on mark, that's one of the few penalties that they HAVE to call in these types of games (along with high sticking, which gave the B's their first two goals).

mark recchi is such a bitch. i hated that guy when he was on the lightning

I had a feeling in the back of my mind that Philly was going to roll over Montreal this series for some reason. So far so good on that.

I don't think Philly is going to "roll over Montreal", but the Canadians will need to come out strong and win Game 2 to squash that idea.

halak has been chased from a game in each series. the habs have laid some serious eggs and made it this far; i'd expect them to play much better in game two.

that being said, i enjoyed game one immensely.

Is there any reason why they didn't stagger the series' from the start? Could have had the west on Sun/Tue/Thu/Sat and East Mon/Wed/Fri/Sun instead of doubling up on Sunday and Tuesday while leaving Monday and Wednesday blank.

i also don't know why our fans were chanting "usa! usa!" when most of our players are from canada and we have two american players. singing that ole ole ole song was cool though.

Not sure, but I think it may have something to do with the big time zone difference, so they figure they can get a huge night of hockey out of 2 games back to back. Plus, they are cognizant of competing with other entertainment, and might feel they would do better on Sun/Tue than on Sun/Mon/Tue/Wed

I was going to say maybe they had booking issues with the arenas...but it looks like Philly's arena has nothing else going on this week.

Damn, it looks like Halak and the Canadiens luck is starting to run out.

They still haven't scored in this series.

Philly's scored 13 straight goals which is tied for the third most ever in a single postseason. 15 is the record.
