A nice article going over the penalty minutes disparity between the two teams.

http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-blackhawks-one-goal/2010/06/i-hate-to-be-the-guy-that-brings-up-the-officiating-but.html

So far in this series, the Hawks have served 36 penalty minutes. The Flyers, meanwhile, have served 22 penalty minutes. Neither number includes the 10 minute game misconducts to Pronger and Eager after game 2.

That's a pretty big difference in four games, but it gets even worse when you consider each team's track record. Let's take a look at the regular season, and before you dismiss regular season stats as useless, remember that it is an 82-game sample size for a team's tendencies.

In the regular season, Philadelphia ranked 2nd in the entire NHL in penalty minutes behind only Tampa Bay. The Hawks, meanwhile, ranked 25th in the NHL in penalty minutes.

On a game by game basis, the Flyers averaged 16.6 penalty minutes a game in the regular season compared to the Hawks' 11.3.

Even if you don't want to look at the regular season, just look at the rest of the playoffs: Even after 4 games in which the Hawks have racked up 14 more penalty minutes than the Flyers, Phiadelphia still leads the playoffs in total penalty minutes.

So how does a team that, on average, sits in the box for 5 more minutes per night than another team suddenly become angels in comparison?

ridiculous. I honestly don't know why this is happening. We've all seen Philly get away with blatent penalties all series. If I was a conspiracy theorist, I'd suggest that the NHL thought the Blackhawks would roll over Philly coming into the series and had to find some way to try to even them up a bit. If that were the case, I'd expect a much more even officiated game in Game 5. It would make sense to have this occur too. 3rd and 4th biggest NHL markets, both teams have tradition and passionate fan bases. The Blackhawks are a really enjoyable team to watch (or so I've been told) and the Flyers are the ultimate Cinderella. There are storylines galore, and if there was a series that the NHL could use to put their game into the national spotlight, this would have to be it.

That said, I just have a hard time believing in conspiracy theories unless there is some sort of proof (NBA Doughnahy). So it really perplexes me as to why the Hawks

are getting such a bad shake from the officials. Even weirder is how no one is picking up on the disparity.

Put me down for "whoever wins G5 tonight, wins the SC".

- IF Philadelphia wins tonight, I see them also winning the next one at home; ie, PHI in 6

- IF Chicago wins tonight, I see them losing @ WC again but winning it all in Game 7 back home in the UC

I think the announcers, especially Olczyk, are seeing it - they just either aren't allowed to say it, or are voluntarily keeping their mouths shut about it. I know someone said they showed the slash call by a CHI player on Pronger, on CBC, but both 'Doc' and '"Eagle-Eye" Eddie'" admitted complete confusion on the call because they're own replays didn't catch it. And numerous times, both are heard saying during games "[PHI player] got away with one there against [CHI player]".

Sad thing is, Gary Bettman is right there in the stands - at least he was @ both games in Philly - but still its happening with alarming frequency.

I know it may sound like whining, but the Hawks should call out the referees, especially McCreary.

i really hope the blackhawks minds aren't on officiating right now

It was a rough Friday night. I was in Orlando and went out to the bar to watch the game (stupid hotel not having Versus...) and it was LOADED with philly fans. Luckily the guy I was sitting next to at the bar wasn't a total douche, but the douchiness reared its ugly head as I left after the 4th goal. I would have been kicking myself if the Hawks had come back to tie it in the last minute.

I had a dream last night that the Hawks blew a 2-0 lead to the Red Wings and the Asshat Wings fan at my office never let me hear the end of it.

Don't keep this up, Hawks, I can't take much more.

Kyle, you are a drama queen and a half.

That's my guy who writes that blog. Good stuff as usual.

I agree with UMFan. I don't see this series going past six games. Whoever wins tonight will clinch it on Wednesday.

I'm outta here for the next week. I've got a wedding to attend and then visit with the in-laws in Nova Scotia. So yes, I won't be watching anything sports related for the next week. So, when I leave---within the hour---I will leave it in your hands guys, to will the Hawks to a victory.

11.3 penalty minutes per game? Does that sound excessive to anyone else? That's over 5 penalties per game.

with fighting majors, matching minors, 10 minute misconducts? 11.3 is probably awfully low on the whole.

I don't know why, but I really like this image:

If only a non-scrub was the Hawk in the picture

I posted this on facebook also, but I am putting the Over/Under on Chelsea Daggers tonight at 3.5 (including a potential post-victory playing), and I am taking the over.

No line changes for the morning skate but that's likely Q just hiding his intentions. Ladd and Keith didn't go but are expected to play.

Toews is too good and has stepped up in too many big moments for me to think his sub-par play continues tonight.

The Philadelphia Union (MLS team) came out in Flyers styled unis for last nights game IN CHICAGO vs. the Fire. The Fire of course won 2-1. Good omen.

They only wore them when they came out on the pitch.

Chelsea Dagger played after the Fire's 2nd goal. Possibly the first, couldn't hear.

This is definitely the most nerveracking sporting event for me since game 7 in 2003.

My stomach is legit turning right now.

I was in Sarasota and refused to go to a bar for fear of that happening. Luckily for me, they had Versus on the cable system at the condo we were staying at, so I could watch and be pissed off in solitude. Losses don't really stay with me, but I thought those two were going to ruin my vacation. A day on the gulf yesterday (the non-oily part) saved it.

I haven't gone back and read the last 40 pages or so. I'm sure this has all been said before. But the officiating is [expletive] terrible. It's obvious the NHL wanted a 6-7 game series, and they were pretty sure the Hawks could sweep or win in 5 without help. I don't say this lightly -- I know it sounds stupid and whiny. But there's no other explanation. Not only are the penalties so plentiful and disproportionate to the [expletive] Philly is getting away with, but they are so suspiciously timed.

The Hawks are really getting the momentum in the first period the other night -- BOOM -- [expletive] penalty. It's been like that all too often.

That said, the defense has to be better tonight. They have gotten way too undisciplined. Do that, and we go back to Philly with a chance to take this thing on Wednesday.

Oh man, I'm nervous. Logically, I keep thinking they're the better team and will right the ship like they have each time it was necessary in the playoffs so far. However, I can't help but have some sinking dread that they gave the series away in Philly (and, yeah, I know it's still 2-2 with the Hawks holding home ice).

This will be the second game of the playoffs (I think) that I'll be here posting and not at a bar or working. The other was a loss.

Well, don't post then.

I'm pretty superstitious - but not that superstitious.
