How long was it before the NHL abandoned the locality-centric draft rules? Where you essentially drew teams from your surrounding area? I imagine that really hamstrung a Chicago team compared to New York, Boston and the Canadian teams.

It still boggles my mind that the Hawks played in a 6 team league for around 40 years and only won the title 3 times.

Not to mention that between their last title in 61 and 1997 they made the playoffs 35 teams in 36 years, and didn't win the Cup once.

I think the biggest problem for the Hawks is that for a decade or two they supposedly acted like Detroit's farm team, or so I've heard it told.

Weren't they owned by the same people?

Sort of....from wikipedia:

[blackhawks] Owner and founder Frederic McLaughlin died in 1944. His estate sold the team to a syndicate headed by longtime team president Bill Tobin. However, Tobin was only a puppet for Red Wings owner James E. Norris, who had been the Black Hawks' landlord since his 1936 purchase of Chicago Stadium. Ironically, Norris had made a bid for what became the Black Hawks in 1926, losing out to McLaughlin. For the next eight years, the Norris-Tobin ownership, as a rule, paid almost no attention to the Black Hawks. Nearly every trade made between Detroit and Chicago ended up being Red Wing heists. As a result, for the next several years, Chicago was the model of futility in the NHL. Between 1945 and 1958, they only made the playoffs twice.

Bernstein is not a big hockey fan. He doesn't really watch other hockey besides the Blackhawks and didn't watch them until the last couple of years. He poses questions for the die-hard hockey fans because he's a casual fan.

My recollection is that Bernstein is a closet fan and Boers is downright hostile toward hockey. Is that pretty much still the deal?

Boers isn't hostile toward hockey at this point that I've noticed, but he's also pretty quiet when the topic comes up.

Yeah and it only took the Blackhawks 35 more years of existence in a 6 team league to get that one extra title!

'67 expansion minus '42 contraction is only 25 homey.

beaten by sully.

and yeah, the nhl has been a pretty dysfunctional league for most of its history, in addition to the general wackiness of professional hockey historically and culturally. that's why something like the 'hawks fief-like status to the redwings could fly. quite a shame, but we have years of dominating the wings to look forward to. the trends are clear, chicago is better than detroit at everything except post-apocolyptic cityscapes.

I didn't know what the actual time period was so i threw in a number and put "around" (don't worry I know "around" can't be used for a 15 year gap and make sense, I admit I threw an inaccurate number out there). And besides, 2 of their titles came outside that time range. They were in a 6 team league for 25 years and won 1 title.

yeah, that's totally sad. hopefully we have somewhat of a dynasty on our hands, and we can do some winning to make up for all that losing.

I will wager you a nickle that the Wings finish higher then the Hawks next season

Hockey players are not well spoken.

I doubt it, but I wonder if the NFL has any regrets for putting the kibosh on the Bears/Blackhawks commercial. Being tied in with them right now could be a very good thing.

The NHL put the kibosh on my deal. Now I'm gonna put the kibosh on you. You know I've kiboshed before and I will kibosh again.
