Smoltz in the Braves booth points out that you can't tell if a close pitch is a strike because the camera angle skews the view. I heart him forever.

You certainly can if you watch from the same angle for tens of thousands of pitches, like most of us have done with the camera at Wrigley. You just need to adjust to the skewed perspective.

For Castro and arbitration, the key is that he not be in the top 1-6th of all players in his rookie class in terms of service time. There's no set date, but it's usually between 1 and 2 months I think

I guess the question was about arbitration and not pushing back FA by a year.

To avoid being a super-two, it usually takes until June.

Yeah I was, but both are good to know.

Thanks.

To be more precise on the FA part of it...

A player has to have six complete years of MLB service time to earn free agency. When a player is optioned to the minors to avoid the full year of service time, he has to spend a minimum of 10 days in the minors before he can be recalled.

cashner struck out the side in the first inning... call him up and send down zambrano imo

I think we will shortly be at that tipping point where we must decide to go real young and see if all our top prospects pan out or stick with aging vets. The next year or two should be interesting.

A team with the Cubs resources never needs to go all in with youth like that.

Obviously which is why some may be traded away. We have Vitters, Castro, Jay Jackson, Cashner and Brett Jackson who will all within two years be at the normal age and experience level that they get their shot.

Do we keep Zambrano or get rid of him (or one of the others) in the next year or so to make room for Cashner/Jackson. Do we let ARam go to make room for Vitters? Does Castro come up this season? When does Brett Jackson come to the majors?

All those decisions will have to be made within the next year or two except perhaps Brett Jackson.

Lilly may not be resigned, Gorzo can get traded easily and Silva better be gone by then.

Adjust how? Do you look at the same pitches with and without the skewed perspective to learn?

I need to remember these DP's when later in the year I feel only the Cubs hit into them during these type situations.

Aside from trying to figure out the actual location of the plate by mentally rotating the image, I figure I've seen something like one hundred and thirty thousand pitches called by various umpires at Wrigley in the past decade. You get a pretty good idea which locations are anomalous.

On a side note, it looks like MLB.tv is much more in-sync with television broadcasts this year.

No more Fred ruining it for me with his ultra fast PBP \:D/
