The Reds will start during the first week of the season.

What is their rotation?

Cueto

Harang

Arroyo

Bailey

Chapman

is that correct?

that is not that bad of a staff if Chapman is solid, and I am predicting a break-out season from Bailey.

I didn't realize Arroyo had such a nice season last year. It was his best in a few years. Figure he regresses a little, Harang gets a little better (can't get worse), and that's a wash. I agree on Bailey though and Chapman. They will be better until he gets hurt.

Baker is already anticipating that Chapman will be a drawing card this spring. He joked that is a reason to bring him in later in the game.

“He’ll be in the bullpen. Down here, it doesn’t matter,” Baker said. “Plus if we pitch him later, the fans stick around and drink more beer.”

I seriously doubt Chapman will start the season in the majors. Scouts say he is very raw and does not have a secondary, nor does he have a feel for pitching. My guess is Chapman will begin in AA.

If so he may pitch against the Smokies, since the Reds' AA team (Carolina) and the Smokies are in the same league. If so I'm so at that game, since Carolina plays less than an hour from my home (I'll undoubtedly go to a couple games anyway).

I imagine he'd be a pretty big draw for any minor league team that gets him for a short time, especially if he's lighting up 102 on the radar gun.

Chapman isn't going to be up until at least May 15th because of the wording in his contract.

With that being said, have fun hitting a lefty who, reportedly, hit 102 on the gun today.

Also, Chapman's secondary stuff has been surprisingly good, reportedly. He has a really good slider and a change up that come in somewhere in the low 80's.

Anybody who says he'll start in AA is on crack. He'll be in AAA.

I think Mike Lincoln, Micah Owings, Kip Wells, Justin Lehr, Matt Maloney, and Travis Wood are also in the hunt for the rotation.

Those names just strike fear in the heart of opponents.

Harang actually did improve last year over a really crappy 2008 season. He was around league average in 2009.

I don't think Owings will be given serious consideration for a rotation spot. I thought I read somewhere during the offseason that they were thinking about giving him a role similar to what the Brewers did with Kieschnick a few years back.

Yeah, I like Maloney the best out of the bunch. He was not terrible when he got called up last year and put up some good peripherals despite not having a great fastball. The big issue is that he has some flyball tendencies which is a concern in that park.

Still 6-14 last year, mid-4's ERA and a 1.41 WHIP.

The record doesn't worry me, as they weren't that great of a team, but I didn't even take a look at the H/9 or the WHIP.

He's always been hittable, but has typically limited the damage with decent strikeout and walk rates. However, he's been even more hittable the past two seasons and has been giving up homers at a higher rate. I think his best days are behind him.

102?

The article I read said he topped out at 100. Regardless, I have no doubt he'll be good (assuming Dusty doesn't ruin him), but at the same time I wouldn't take anything from today's performance. It was the Royals and hitters are still probably a bit behind a high-speed fastball at this point in the spring.

Yeah, I read somewhere that a scout had him clocked at 102. If you really want me to try to find it I will.

He's been impressive overall in camp, today was more of an extension of that. We'll seee what happens though. Like you said, all this really doesn't mean a whole lot.

Kyle Farnsworth throws 100 MPH and has a pretty good slider (sometimes). There's more to it than that.
