I don't think anyone ever doubted he was a team player.

I liked Grace then and I'd side with him now.

I always wonder about assessments like this. What did Grace do that Sammy didnt that made him any more of a 'team player.'

Seems to me that "Team Player" usually is just a different way of saying "Doesn't hit as many home runs"

I can say that Grace was pissed to leave Chicago while Sammy literally couldn't wait to get out the door.

For the record, I'm not a Grace fan.

Grace was my least favorite Cub of all-time until Miles signed.

why?

I'd like anyone who hit .308/.386/.445, 122 OPS+ with great defense over the course of 13 years for us.

I didn't dislike Grace, but he never hit for the power he should have. And we ended up trading away HOF-level production because of him (and Cindy).

I liked him, but always wanted better.

Yeah I always figured that Grace would hit that 2 to 3 year streach in the middle to early second half of his career where he would hit 20 - 25 home runs...but I just kept waiting and waiting.

He had some power in the minors as well - I think he hit 21 in AA iirc.

Anyone remember Dawson getting in crap for saying the Cubs traded the wrong 1B when Palmeiro left?

Grace had a season at AA (iirc) where he had twice as many xbh as k's. That's really freaking rare.

the power just never translated in the majors, though.

Grace was never going to be a huge source of power. You could have done a lot worse than him though. It wasn't Grace's fault that a lot of the team's he played on were so bad.

He hit for average, got on base at a very good rate, and played great defense.

If there had been an effort by the organization to paint Grace as a villain as they did with Sosa at the end then I'm sure he would have been happy to be out of there, too.

Are you referring to Palmeiro? Because if you are, its ironic that his name comes up in the thread about roids. If Grace never used steroids, which I'm going to assume, then it was the right decision to get rid of Raffy and not him. He was a better player when clean. Palmeiro had Grace-like power prior to steroids.

Before reading this thread, I had no idea how many Cub fans seem to dislike Grace. Maybe I've been oblivious because I haven't lived in Chicago for a long time. I always liked him and I was happy to see him win a WS with the D backs.

Honestly, I can't blame Grace for being somewhat upset jealous of the steroids era. If he was in fact clean, he might have become an amazing player with steroids. Look what they seemed to do for Palmeiro. He went from hitting 8 homers in 600+ AB's to a 30-40 home run guy. Instead, he will always be known as a decent player without enough power.
