I don't see how it is petty.

Really? Because if Sammy hadn't been his teammate and he wasn't jealous of him, he wouldn't be doing it. It's not as if Grace is some sort of crusader in the steroids issue. He's picking on Sammy more simply because he was annoyed and jealous of the attention he got. If Sammy had been on another team, Grace probably wouldn't say anything about him at all.

It's Grace being petty.

First off, I don't even know what the big deal is, how often does he talk about Sammy? I can't remember the last time I heard him mention it. However, Sammy was a douche and a likely cheater, and if Grace pokes fun at him from time to time, how is that petty?

Because when you take a shot at someone out of jealousy/envy (as opposed to genuinely being offended by their unscrupulousness), you're being petty. I'm not saying Sosa doesn't deserve some derision, I'm questioning Grace's motivations for pointing it out whenever the opportunity arises, since he usually doesn't have much to say about any of the other notorious juicers/douches. And it's not like Grace is some sort of upright individual, he's a pretty big ass in his own right.

And he mentions Sammy sometimes, but more often you'll hear him take "I'm not going to name any names, but" type jabs clearly about Sosa.

You are assuming it's jealousy, I don't know why. Sammy was his teammate, it makes sense that he makes a comment about a person he knew and shenanigans he would have been able to know about, rather than taking shots at random guys in the league. Sammy is a disgraced former player who isn't involved in the game anymore, why would Grace be jealous of him? He made a ton of money, had a ton of adoring fans, is still in the game and beloved by many.

Wait, how do we know that Grace was a "clean" player?

I'd be willing to be that any performance enhancers he was taking were more along the lines of Viagra and if he was taking injections it was penicillin.

I don't know, obviously. But the animosity goes back to their time as teammates. I thought it was pretty well known that Grace disliked him even then, and that the dislike was tied to the attention Sosa was getting. I'm making an assumption, but I feel pretty safe in it.

But that doesn't prove jealousy. Even if that is exactly what was going on, why couldn't he have just disliked how popular Sammy was on the outside while being a cheating jerk on the inside? If he disliked a popular player who wasn't been hounded by roids scandals and wasn't a complete jerk to teammates, you'd have a case, but calling this a simply case of jealousy is a big stretch with what we know of Sammy and what we think we know of Sammy It's really easy to understand why a teammate wouldn't like him.

It's my opinion. But when you haven't had to deal with the guy in a decade, there's not a lot of reason to keep harping on it, or even give a crap any more.

I'm not going to say that about anyone at this point. We have no idea what kind of uppers and "helpers" Grace opted to use.

screw you guys, mark grace is awesome.

this

Yeah, other than his not so subtle jealousy of Sammy, he's pretty much awesome.

God forbid clean players be jealous of steroid users who put up ridiculous numbers because they cheated. What an ass that Mark Grace is.

not to mention the fans were all completely in love with sammy. i imagine it be pretty hard to sit back and watch a cheater be the fan favorite.

What a bunch of garbage.

Grace jealous of Sosa? Maybe Grace is probably pissed, and rightfully so. If Grace used any PED's, I'll eat an alligator. Sandberg has shown Sammy WAY more disrespect and I don't hear anyone calling him a jealous douche.

If Sammy used PED's, and I think we all know he did, I'm glad players who were obviously clean show some disdain and have an opinion on the matter.

It's a disrespect for the game, and to hell with all of the users.

It's hilarious how people act like they KNOW there's NO WAY that guys like Grace and Sandberg didn't use any kind of PED's.

Ryno had a nice power and health resurgance his last 2 years at ages 36 and 37 after 2 years of noticeable decline and injuries and missing an entire season. Weird. It's interesting how the only consecutive stretch of double digit home run years for Grace came between ages 33 and 37. How wacky!

not really, his wrist was broken in spring training of 1993 and he didn't hit for power after breaking that wrist. so he retired, it healed up better and he was able to drive the ball more after coming back. it's not like sandberg was going downhill for no reason; he hit 92 home runs in 3 years before hurting his wrist and then 14 the next 2 years. it's pretty obvious where the power went.

Technically, theres no way of telling that guys like Aaron, Mays and Mantle werent. Steroids have been out there since the 30's.

Sure, sure. Nice and convenient.

Grace was my least favorite Cub of all-time until Miles signed.

why?

I'd like anyone who hit .308/.386/.445, 122 OPS+ with great defense over the course of 13 years for us.

Unlike Miles, my disliking of Grace doesn't have much, if anything to do with production. Just never really cared for what he had to say.

You must have skipped the Todd Hundley years entirely. Todd Hundley's tenure was so bad, it almost made me hate his dad, who was actually one of my favorite Cubs during his era.

I didn't dislike Grace, but he never hit for the power he should have. And we ended up trading away HOF-level production because of him (and Cindy).

I liked him, but always wanted better.

Clearly Grace and Sammy didn't get along. Sammy was a primadonna, and you can call Grace a d-bag, but I don't think anyone ever doubted he was a team player.

I liked Grace then and I'd side with him now.

I always wonder about assessments like this. What did Grace do that Sammy didnt that made him any more of a 'team player.'

Seems to me that "Team Player" usually is just a different way of saying "Doesn't hit as many home runs"
