34-Jeff Gray

I do not approve of this. What does Jeff Gray think he's doing?

Well, Aaron Gray wears #34 for the Bulls, so why not Jeff Gray.

So Jaramillo is the lucky #7. Are we going to cringe when we see him wearing it, think about Aaron Miles?

I will always think of Jody Davis when I see a #7 on the Cubs.

Retiring numbers is only stupid if it is misused like the Boston Celtics.

The Celtics just retire a lot of #s because they have a [expletive] load of good players in their history. Well, that and Reggie Lewis.

Fixed.

Retiring numbers in baseball is dumb. In football the players are wearing helmets and you can't see their faces. Thus the numbers are a big part of identifying them on the field. I'm ok with someone like Walter Payton having his number retired but not people like Jimbo Covert.

Does anyone really make the connection between a baseball player and the number he wears/ wore? When I think of Andre Dawson I remember his batting stance and intimidating stare. It never once occured to me that he shouldn't wear Santo's #10.

I think lots of people make that connection, nostalgic Yankees fans much moreso than most.

Out of curiosity, what's your take on basketball? Is it even possible to argue that there's not a strong connection between MJ and 23?

You can't tell the players without a scorecard.

Numbers in baseball are meaningless to blind fans I suppose.

They have some great players, but not that many great players. Granted its a very simple view, but here are some career averages for some of their retired number players (PPG, RPG, APG, FG%)

9.6, 6.3, 1.1, .428

12.6, 3.2, 6.4, .446

6.2, 5.6, 0.7, .345

11.4, 5.2, 1.6, .484

13.7, 6.6, 2.3, .559

There are some other really bad stat lines I left off too, but the players are in the Basketball Hall of Fame, so I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt and assume there was something redeeming about them. And yea just the stat lines don't tell the whole story, but shouldn't we be honoring excellence. I also am not too fond of retiring the number of a player just because he died during a season. I mean, yea its tragic, but there are other ways of honoring a teammate.

Late additions:

Xavier Nady - 22

Chad Tracy (NRI) - 9

Changes:

Tom Gorzelanny - 32 (from 22)

John Gaub - 48 (from 32)

Oddly, Welington Castillo is still without a listed number, despite being on the 40-man.

I'm going to guess that Nady did not win that number in an arm wrestling contest with Gorzellany.
