Wow, that has to be the first time a competitor was disqualified by his coach. That coach is so fired.

 

when they started it off by showing his reaction, I didn't know what had happened, and I thought he was overreacting to his coach for his mistake. Then they said how it happened, and that coach is lucky he didn't punch him.

Awesome game between Latvia and the Czechs. The Czechs got an early 2-0 lead and you figured it would be a romp. They went to sleep in the 2nd, Jagr got hurt and Latvia got 2 goals in the 3rd to send it to OT. Finally the Czechs got the winning goal with less than 5 to go in OT.

 

Would have been incredible to think that USA could have had a path to the gold medal game without Sweden, Russia, Canada or the Czech Republic as possible opponents in the quarters or semi's.

And this Slovakia/Norway is great as well. A with 1/10 of a second tied it at the end of the 2nd period. Sitting on the sofa for these four games all day has been great.

the Russian/Canadian quarterfinal game is going to be incredible. 2 very talented desperate teams. I think Babcock needs to look at the film and make some tough calls. Several top players(egos) are not playing well at all and are getting top minutes(Iginla, Pronger, Neidermayer) I thought Keith played great last night, but it seemed like he was not in the game much. I cant find a box score that has minutes played, but my guess is Seabrook played less then 5. Which seems bizarre since Pronger and Neidermayer were playing so poorly. Toews and Nash have been Canada's best forwards and finally seemed to be getting quality minutes in the 3rd period last night.

 

On the contrary it seems that Wilson is rewarding players who are giving good effort with more time. Which is leading to better effort from everyone. USA may have been out skilled last night but they were not out worked. The won the face-off battle, they won the battles in front of the net, and they won the battles for the puck in the corners. These are the things that win championships/medals in hockey.

 

pronger had 3 minutes of ice time in the third; keith and doughty had the most ice time in the game for canada.

 

i thought crosby was actually pretty good.

 

yes Crosby played well. Doughty has probably been their best dman overall. It was obvious the US was just dumping pucks in behind Pronger and Neidermayer and taking advantage of how slow they are.

 

Do you think Yzerman should have added Ryan Smythe to put some pressure on opposing goalies in front of the net?

 

nah. i can't think of anyone that smyth would replace to be honest. he wouldn't be able to play in a top 6 role, and if you really wanted to, you could have morrow do his job on the power play. morrow is also a harder worker and is one of the players that is willing to get dirty that everyone talks about on the US (backes, brown, ryan, drury, callahan). smyth isn't that guy.

 

they should have had stamkos (especially after seeing doughty be awesome at the same age) and probably green on the team, but other than that i don't think any of the omissions are that glaring or bad. pronger definitely shouldn't have made the team though.

he's playing much worse in this tournament than he has for the flyers this year.

 

very very very much looking forward to russia-canada. i have a volleyball game in the middle of it but i'm definitely using the dvr.

I'm hoping I can avoid hearing anything about the USA game until I get home. I'll have that dvr'ed and can then start the Canada/Russia game right away.

i would to be honest. i've watched parts of two of their games and they certainly aren't impressive so far in this tournament. i'm not a big fan of kipper and their backend is not outstanding. their top level scoring (selanne, skoivu) is old.. jokinen has gone backwards in a big way. mikko koivu and niklas hagman aren't going to carry an offense. even the US has kane and parise at forward. i wouldn't put one finland forward on their level.

The only game I got to watch a lot of the Finns was against Sweden. They were very out-matched. I agree with a lot of your assessment. But Finland is also not chopped liver. In this one and done format, they can easily beat the US in a game. I am sure the US would win a best of 7, but of course Canada would beat the US in a best of 7 also. It may all be moot, since they have to beat the czechs first.
