TUESDAY, 11:50am: MLB.com's Carrie Muskat tweets that Cubs officials say Sheets' current asking price does not fit their budget. Sheets' agent Casey Close could stand to do a better job controlling the information on his client, because the reports of a $10-12MM demand make him look bad. Muskat says the Cubs are still looking for right-handed relief.

[expletive] John Grabow.

If we had the money to spend, I wouldn't guarantee $10 million a year for Sheets anway.

Come on, we're going to give up this easily?

Make him come down on his number. He wants to play in Wrigley, I'll bet.

Get it the hell done.

Yeah, this doesn't sound like the end at all. It sounds like the Cubs scoffing at his publicized asking price.

Sheets would be a fantastic addition for the Cubs, and probably a Brewers fan's worst nightmare. For all the crap he got from Milwaukee fans while he was with the team, I still think he can be a very good pitcher -- I don't see him losing much effectiveness other than just rust from not being on a mound.

From the Brewers' perspective, it's a shame that all the bridges seem to be burned. I do hope he finds success elsewhere, though, as he's an extremely likable guy and one of the best talents in the game when he's on. I just hope the success is with Texas, New York, Tokyo...anywhere but Chicago.

I think he wanted 10-12mil over 2 years, which Id defintiely do. Theres no way in hell hed get 10mil/year after sitting out 2009.

That is correct. That was over 2 years. The sad news is that Cubs officials are saying that they can't afford it. That means their payroll situation is tighter than I thought.

But it's not going to stop us from signing a veteran RH relief pitcher for 2/6-8

Which brings me back to [expletive] John Grabow, or at least his contract and the doofus who gave it to him.

well of course his current asking price doesnt fit the budget, or any other team's budget for that matter. 2 years at 10-12 each year is ridiculous.

it was 10-12 each year, not overall

Sheets can ask for 10-12 million all he wants. I'd love 10-12 million, too. Most he's going to get is 5 mil with incentives to take it to 8-9 mil. I'd love for the Cubs to sign him.

My guess is his agent is trying a last attempt to ignite a good old fashioned Yankees/Red Sox bidding war before accepting something closer to the 5-6 mil/year+incentives.

OMG, you're right. I had read in another thread on this board that it was 10-12 over 2 years, but when I googled it, the only thing I could find was that he is seeking that amount per season. That's ridiculous.

With situations like this, I wonder how much of it is the player himself and how much his agent.

Please Jim, get this done.

We have been beaten too many times by your stupid decisions. Make a good one, and sign Ben Sheets.

Signing Sheets may be stupid if it's another bad contract.

Also, someone here said MLB Network was reporting he was topping out at 90? If that doesn't increase, i pass.

Of course but correct me if i'm wrong on this, wasn't sheets suppose to start throwing later this month? Didnt know he had already started.

Also in regards to Muskats report, its pretty much what we already know. Cubs aren't going to sign sheets unless his demands go down big time.

I could see the Orioles giving Sheets what he's asking for. Sometimes it seems like they are trying to spend confederate money when it comes to FAs. They could overpay and they could use a vet like Sheets to compliment their young rotation.

I don't think he's that nice of a guy

Considering Harden - three years younger, actually pitched last year, more of an upside when healthy - only got one year and $7.5m, I have a hard time seeing Sheets getting anywhere close to two years and $6m from anyone. For that kind of money, the Cubs could have just offered Harden arbitration.
