When I first heard this announced on tv... the first thing I thought was, "wait.... the Phillies just got ANOTHER ace?". Then they mentioned that Lee got traded in the process... so it wasn't quite as crazy. What I don't understand is why Lee can't find a good home. All the guy does is pitch lights-out ball.

I'm just gonna ignore all rumors until it's done and official. Every update on MLBTR has new players in, old players out, then oldp layers back in going to a different team along with new players headed back... I can't tell who IS going where except Halladay to Philly and Lee to Seattle
Posted

Right now it looks like 2 separate trades.

Halladay to Philly for 3 PHI prospects

Lee to Seattle for 2 SEA prospects

Blue Jays are only getting prospects from Philly's system.

he's only done it for 2 years. and the reason he's been moved twice is BECAUSE he's pitched lights out ball

this seems like more of a risk management type move for the phils. they could have just extended lee and hoped he pitched like he has the last 2 seasons, but that would be pretty risky (at least for the money that he'll demand) considering his track record. i wouldn't want to give 15-20 million for a guy like that. halladay is a much safer play (not to mention he's a better pitcher.

the phils will have halladay/hamels for the next 4 years. that's pretty beastly (despite hamels' 2009)

Geesh, imagine if they hadn't traded Lee. That would have been an amazing rotation.

Yeah, kind of hard to argue with the move by the Phils here, barring the final trade. They lose some prospects, but they get a pitcher of greater (or certainly at least equal) value as Cliff with the guarantee of 4 years? Easy call. Great move.

This is really a solid move by all teams here. The Phillies were scared about Lee because he was determined to test Free Agency. The great unknown, and I don't think Philly wanted to get trapped into locking Lee up for 7 years or something.

Instead, they get a better pitcher who is allegedly about to sign a 3 year extension. They'll get screwed in dollars per year but the years themselves is the draw.

For Seattle, they get a friend for King Felix and a hell of a trade chip next season, sans no trade clause, and the hope that maybe they can talk him into sticking around.

Hard to see an obvious loser here.

I honestly do not understand why this is a 3-team trade as of yet. And for the life of me, I don't know why the Phillies didn't just hang on to Lee and get the picks next offseason.

I guess there money was just that tight? Lee's option was for 8 million right?

Halladay

Lee

Hamels

Blanton

Happ?

UNREAL, too bad

No worries. I rarely get where you are coming from either.

Michael Taylor Will Be Traded For Brett Wallace

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 15 at 11:04am CST]

The Blue Jays will trade outfielder Michael Taylor to the A's for third base prospect Brett Wallace, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney.

The A's acquired Wallace from the Cardinals when they sent Matt Holliday to St. Louis in July. The Jays drafted Wallace in 2005, but he went to college and signed with the Cards as a first rounder in the 2008 draft. The 23-year-old hit .281/.403/.438 in the upper minors for the A's and Cards.

Now, THAT is a good move by the Blue Jays!

I personally think Taylor's probably a better prospect than Wallace. Although the Jays already have two good young corner outfielders so I can see why they made the move.

The way I have read it is that it is two two-team trades, not a 3 team trade. One trade is just dependent of another one being completed.

They said the Phillies were told Lee wanted Sabathia type money and they refuse to give starting pitchers of his age over a 3 year deal. They weren't going to resign Lee and now have control of Halladay for several years. Plus I would take Halladay in a heartbeat over Lee.

And Lee is owed $9m, that's a fairly big amount for any budget. It would be great to keep Lee after acquiring Halladay, but it's not realistic. They upgraded their pitching staff, and partially restocked their prospects.

so the deal appears to be:

phillies give up: cliff lee, kyle drabek, michael taylor, travis d'arnaud

phillies receive: roy halladay, phillipe aumont, j.c. ramirez, tyson gillies, $6 million

blue jays give up: roy halladay, $6 million

blue jays receive: kyle drabek, michael taylor, travis d'arnaud

mariners give up: phillipe aumont, j.c. ramirez, tyson gillies

mariners receive: cliff lee

i feel like the phillies make out pretty well here, getting nice prospects from the mariners along with four years of a great pitcher. the blue jays did get drabek but miss out on dominic brown, who i like quite a bit. cliff lee is obviously very good and greatly improves seattle this year, plus they can either get a good return on him at the trade deadline (if they suck) or take the two high picks for him if they're in contention. reasonable deal for all parties.

Wow, the Jays are getting Drabek and Wallace, argueably 2 of the top 10 prospects in the game. Thats a pretty good return for a guy who had no intention of re signing with them next year, especially in a season in which they had no chance of finishing better than 3rd, and thats being generous.

Don't forget that the M's are trading Taylor to the Blue Jays for Wallace.

That's all sorts of backwards... Blue Jays trade Taylor to the A's for Wallace

Wow... my brain went all farty.

Posted

So is what the Phils gave up more than they were offering at the trade deadline or did the Blue Jays accept less? (If anyone knows)

Would you trade all the prospects the Phils traded for Lee + the ones they traded for Halladay for Halladay plus the ones they got back from Seattle (and 6M) or is that oversimplifying because of what's known now about Lee's stance on his next contract?
