Any chance Hendry takes a different veteran off the scrap heap and replaces Hill?

why would he?

Because Hill isn't very good?

I'm not going to pretend like I know a great deal about Koyie Hill but the guy committed 3 errors in over 600 innings and hit better than most backups and some starters in his first season of consistent play. He seems like an above average backup catcher to me.

That's why he's a backup catcher. Backup catchers aren't very good or else they'd be starting catchers.

Zing .

Is Meph back ?

The guy caught every game for over a month, made only 3 errors while throwing out 40% of the base stealers, managed to keep his OBP over .300, and made less than 1/2 a million in a backup role.

But lets get someone better, he isn't very good.

And then let's all complain about how Hendry replaced a decent backup catcher and paid him too much money.

Hill is perfectly fine as a backup. He's very good defensively and even had a decent year with the bat. Bring him back.

a 237 average with no power, and doesn't get on base?

On the XM yesterday they had Josh Bard on who's a switch hitter who's bounced around a little but has hit well in a few seasons. He mentioned that he made might have to take a one year deal in the $1 mi rangel backuping up for a contender to prove he's healthy and can peform.

What do you really expect from a backup catcher? The guy caught a million games in a row last year yet still was rock solid behind the plate. He's a good guy to have on the team.

Yes, lets replace Hill with a guy who hit for an even worse average, got on base even less, was worse on defense, and made over a million dollars more.

In 2006, 2007 , Bard was hitting at pretty solid clip

285av/364OBP/ 768ops 389ABS 2007

333 av/404OBP/926ops 249ABS 2006

Hill being a nice guy doesn't mean Hendry shouldn't look for a backup catcher that can a hit a little bit in case Soto struggles or misses time again with injury.

And since then his numbers have been really bad. I'm not sure why you expect him to go back to those numbers.

The only reason to replace Hill is if you think Soto won't bounce back. The prospect of Hill as the starter because Soto flops again frightens me.

given the surplus of back up catchers we have in the minors I doubt Hendry wastes money in that area, then again Hendry does love to burn those bones

I think it's more likely because of an injury, but that's the crux of it, yeah.

The Cubs may have gone 16-10 during that month Soto was out, but it was in no way because Hill did his job anywhere near acceptably well. He's exposed quickly when given too much time. As such, provided the cost is cheap enough, I wouldn't be opposed to acquiring a more reliable backup.

But he said he was "gonna prove he's healthy and can perform".
