Good for Brian. Probably had to be said. The vast majority of legendary Chicago sports figures that talk about current guys not knowing what it takes to win, never won a damn thing themselves.

I agree with everything that Brian said. This was definately the one "Brian's Song" he didn't want to be apart of. As much as Gale was a great player for the Bears, he really did speak out of turn, imo, and I'm glad Brian put him back in his spot.

Are you a budding terrible sportswriter?

Nope, budding 90s sitcom writer......

Urlacher definitely has been, but I get the sense that he's a bit less of a douche than he used to be.

He's much more outspoken in the last couple of years than he has been.

I'm trying to figure out why Urlacher is so pissed about these comments. Nothing Sayers said was off point. I can understand why Urlacher is irked by the criticism directed at him. He's a proud guy and a fierce competitor, but he missed an entire season due to injury. His performance has been leveling off in recent years, and he may be reaching the end of his shelf life.

Sayers's criticism of the team seems to be inline with what most football people think. They need more receivers, the defensive secondary is weak, and Cutler and Urlacher are major question marks going into next year.

Part of it is because these Sayers comments came out of left field. Not to mention Sayers, while he was a great player, never played in the postseason much less win a postseason game, criticizing a team that is 4 years removed from reaching the super bowl. So how would Sayers know what it takes to win? Adding in the fact that it was a member of the Bears family who made these comments, is really stood out. As Urlacher said, the Bears are getting shot at by the media everywhere they go, they don't need to take shot from inside the Bears family.

1. Sayers was asked a question. Is he supposed to lie? Whether he's part of the Bears family or not he was asked to give his opinion. If the Bears improve their on field play then I'm sure Sayers will change his tune quickly.

2. Great the Bears made the Super Bowl four years ago, and haven't done anything since. Four years is an eternity in NFL.

3. The Bears have only made the playoffs three times since Urlacher was drafted. That's really not that impressive.

It's more impressive than the Sayers era. Gale easily could have been more diplomatic. Just say something about how they've struggled and need guys like Cutler and Urlacher to step up. Instead he's talking about Lovie losing his job and overstating the Cutler struggles.

There's nothing wrong with what he said, but as a Bear who still presents himself as a Bear, he has to expect to be called out, especially since he has no authority to speak of winning.

Yeah, it's not really about whether Sayers should lie or not. It's about how you say it. Sayers doesn't seem to have much of a filter. He just blurts out all kinds of stuff, offensive or not.

That's fine, but if you are going to do that then don't act all shocked when someone calls you on the carpet for it. And don't make it seem like it's a black and white, "I either lie or tell the truth" issue.

It's the ultimate showdown of ultimate Bears destiny...

On Thursday, Butkus responded from his Southern California home, telling the Tribune: "It's a real reach to say: 'What did Gale do?' (Shoot), Urlacher wasn't even born yet, what does he know?

"I say things to other people, too, about the Bears. It's total frustration. You think (Sayers) is saying it because he hates the Bears? You get so tired of sitting there watching them."

Urlacher discredited the opinion of Sayers by pointing out that he played on the 1-13 team in 1969, even though Sayers gained over 1,000 yards in a 14-game season after undergoing major knee surgery the previous year.

"I think he is a little out of line by the way he is handling the whole thing and blaming the whole (1969) season on Gale," said Butkus of Urlacher. "That's uncalled for."

"I've gone through it. To go nine years and come out with knee injuries...you know your ability is going to be hampered a little bit. (Urlacher) is dead wrong right there. Maybe that's why he was trying to deflect that part of it by saying: 'Well, what does he know? He never won.'

"It's a little defensive move on his part. His pride got hurt," Butkus said.

I smell a tag-team steel cage deathmatch. Winner takes all.

Peter King released his preseason rankings....

Green Bay #1

Chicago #25

25. Chicago. The Mike Martz-Jay Cutler marriage could work, or it could explode. The defense will be solid, assuming Julius Peppers comes to play, but he can't solve everything on a unit that allowed 375 points last year.

lol

Yeah that's pretty bad. I'm optimistic about the upcoming season but Favre's going to come back. We're still not going to be the best team in our own division, let alone the entire league.

Peter King sucks.

"naww I'm n town 4 business! Just happened 2 run n2 jay," Owens tweeted when asked if he would become a Bear.

Still, Owens might be hanging out with the Bears some more. There could be a hoops game Monday and Olsen invited him to the beach.

"Good times. Hit the beach with us tomorrow. True Chicago summer," Olsen tweeted.

Responded Owens: "lemme kno wht time, goin 2 hoop @ noon then my appearance @ niketown @ 7"

Mike Mulligan of the Chicago Sun-Times writes that the Bears contacted Trent Green about playing again 3-4 weeks ago, but the FOX broadcaster decided to stay in retirement. The door doesn't sound fully closed, though.

"The situation might be fluid," Mulligan writes.

I don't know why he would come back just to sit the bench all year. He'd really have an "injury only" opportunity here.

Same with Bulger, who I heard someone mention.
