Mike Mulligan of the Chicago Sun-Times writes that the Bears contacted Trent Green about playing again 3-4 weeks ago, but the FOX broadcaster decided to stay in retirement. The door doesn't sound fully closed, though.

"The situation might be fluid," Mulligan writes.

I don't know why he would come back just to sit the bench all year. He'd really have an "injury only" opportunity here.

Same with Bulger, who I heard someone mention.

There is little motivation for these guys, but I can see why the Bears would inquire with both. I'm sure Martz would love to have a veteran of his system around to help mentor Cutler, et al.

I doubt some retired QB is going to be mentoring Cutler at this point. A) He's already an established QB, and B) He's already spent time in the system. If Trent Green shows up in July I can't imagine Cutler leaning on him for help learning a system he spent all offseason studying.

For the record, I don't like the idea of bringing in a veteran backup.

Brad Biggs mentioned something about Green being less of a real threat to Cutler than Bulger would be, so by bringing him in, he's truly just insurance against Cutler getting injured, but in my mind, you're not going anywhere if Cutler is hurt anyway, so might as well get Hanie some experience in that scenario.

I don't think many coaches view it as "season over" if their top QB goes down. Even if it really is.

I suppose Green could give Jay some system-based pointers when Martz isn't around. That might be of some marginal help.

I'm not totally against it, but I can't see why Green would want to do it.

Martz is gushing about the Bears offense in Peter King's MMQB today...

Martz has been ridiculously over the top with his praise of our players... it's really bizarre...

Apparently that's something he's always done. I'm not sure if it's to this extent, but he's always highly positive about his new players.

It sounds laughable to hear him gush about our WRs. Maybe he knows something we don't.

Tice is impressed with Johan Asiata...a 2nd year undrafted FA...left guard...6'4" 300lbs

``Where I was surprised and where he earned my respect and gained more reps is that I thought when the lights came on and we started working against the defense ... I thought it might be a little too fast for him right now and maybe there were some things he had to sort out,'' Tice said. ``I thought maybe things would be moving a little too quick for him, but it didn't turn out that way.''

I don't find it laughable since pretty much the entire organization has been gushing about the WR since the middle of last year. The Devins get universal praise for obvious reasons, Bennett fulfilled expectations in his first exposure to actually playing and Johnny Knox came on real strong in his rookie year. There's not a lot of track record, but there's been glimpses from all of them for tremendous potential.

I think there's a lot riding on Aromashadu though, since he's really the only big receiver we have. And of course, the o-line to give the receivers time to run routes.

Oh yeah, it's all a big risk. Althoug I'd have to say my concern still lies much more heavily with the line than the receivers. Lines and QBs can make or break receivers. I don't think many receivers can get the job done without them.

The Bears were pretty big on him last year too. With Beekman playing C for Kruetz, I hear Asiata got most of the time at 1st team LG. Lance Louis was at RG exclusively behind Garza. Apparently, Kevin Shaffer is in the mix at LG also.

There's also Iglesias who we really have no idea bout, but someone though he had the potential to be drafted as high as he was. I'm really hoping to start to see him this season, but the top 3 are almost certainly Hester, Knox, Bennett.

I've heard so little about Iglesias, that I'm concerned he may not make the team.

I've heard his name quite a bit as a guy expected to do what Bennett did last year. As for the top 3, I would not lock in Knox and Bennett above Aroma. He's got as good a shot as any to be the go to guy.

Agreed. I think Hester, Aroma and Knox is a more likely starting trio. Not that Bennett won't have his fair share of PT.

Yeah, I think Aromashodu will force his way on the field along with Bennett. I would even go as far to say I would expect him to be the opening game starter, for whatever that is worth.

Here's my realistic prediction and hope:

2 WR set- Aromashodu and Hester

3 WR set- Aromashodu and Knox/Bennett outside, Hester/Knox in the slot.

4 WR set- Aromashodu and Knox outside, Hester and Bennett in the slot.

Iglesias establishes himself as the primary backup outside for DA. Bennett gets in there as a backup at every position, depending on who is resting after returning a kick between Knox and Hester.

Earl Bennett isn't any good.

50 catches, 700 yards, 13 YPC in his 1st year of playing indicates he's at least decent.

It's almost inevitable that someone is going to put up numbers when you drop back and pass a lot. He's a compiler, not a difference maker. Dude is afraid to get hit.

He's not elite, but that doesn't justify your comment that he isn't any good.

The problem is that all our guys are far from elite. We have a couple Ricky Proehls and Az Hakims, at best, and no Isaac Bruces or Torry Holts. Martz always had great receivers in St. Louis.
