Olsen is also very cheap and under contract for 2 seasons, while the Bears would take some of a cap hit due to the prorated signing bonus.
That would make me happy, because that would mean a collective bargaining agreement has been reached and there actually is a cap to take a hit against.

Here's a thought. Would the Bears be going after a 2nd round pick in order to go after a restricted free agent? Pierre Thomas, maybe Brandon Marshall?

The Bears have taken an illegal running head start towards free agency, according to the Chicago Tribune.

David Kaplan reports that the representative for Julius Peppers, Carl Carey, met with Bears brass during the NFL Scouting Combine. Carey has only one active contract in the NFL, so he's not just chit-chatting.

We know: this stuff happens all the time. It happens so much, the word "tampering" isn't even in the Tribune's story.

Denials will come swiftly Wednesday, but the league has to have a problem when their rules are flaunted so publicly.

I'm just happy they're showing legitimate interest in spending money this offseason.

The other possibility is that Kaplan was mistaken.

Apparently Sportscenter, citing the Kaplan blurb, said that the Bears met with Peppers himself. Nicely done ESPN. Way to report the facts.

Well here's another factor in the whole Olsen trade scenario...

Peggy Kusinski of NBC Chicago reports that friends of Olsen say he was not happy about the hiring of Martz, and that he quietly sent his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, into "trade request" mode.

He's 2 years away from free agency, so he needs to step it up now if he wants to get paid. It makes sense to me that he'd dislike the Martz signing, especially since Martz highlighted his preference for blocking tight ends early and often. If Olsen wasn't such a disappointment I'd be bummed about this situation, but I'm not.

Led the Bears in catches and TD's last year, but yeah...I agree. He's certainly not irreplaceable, and a blocking TE could help the run game.

He was also targetted all day every day and had several crucial drops. He just hasn't come close to being a top notch tight end that can take over a game as advertised.

Good god...it's like Bears day at PFT or something...

...hardly anyone seems to think Marshall will be a Bronco in 2010.

The biggest question is which team would be the best landing spot for Marshall, and Neil Hayes of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that it could be the Bears. Hayes writes that Bears GM Jerry Angelo's comments about wide receiver not being a ''need'' position are viewed by many as a smoke screen, and that one NFL source wagered a steak dinner on Marshall being in a Bears uniform when camp opens.

We've had this discussion before, but the off-the-field stuff for Marshall is too big of a risk for me. Most off-the-field stuff doesn't bother me, but I'm pretty damn leary about taking a chance on a habitual wife-beater.

You can always force him to get a divorce.

Marshall for Olsen.

Broncos have Sheffler. Why would they want Olsen?

Because I want them to, and Orton can't throw to anybody but tight ends.

Well if your "wanting" them to is the primary consideration, I bet we could make some kickass trades this season. :)

If the Bears are going to turn into the Broncos of the Midwest, they should at least have hired Shanahan.

I think taking their 2 best offensive players could be a nice consolation prize.

Olson for Marshall?

All day long I make that trade.

If it's not Olsen for Marshall, I'm not sure how we have the ammo to get Marshall.

I've heard they hope they can get a 2nd rounder for Marshall, and a 2nd rounder sounds about right for Olsen. Marshall is a bigger impact player but he's more expensive and a problem child. Olsen is not a problem child and signed cheaply for 2 years, and still has upside.

Gotcha...so Olsen to Pats for 2nd rounder...Marshall to Bears for 2nd rounder.

would the chargers take forte for cromartie?

sign chester taylor and draft a rb next year.

I don't think he'd be a good fit for this defense. He's better at man coverage and can't tackle anyone. Corners need to be able to hit in Lovie's D.

(insert joke about how the Bears can't tackle anyone either)
