It's really weird to be passionate enough about a coach to follow the team's he moves to.

not really

Yes, it is.

Unless it is a coach that coached you, or your kid, it's incredibly weird.

not at all. following a coach because of their philosophy isn't weird at all. I'd say the likes of Phil Jackson, Belichek, and the like are good reasons to be fans of the teams they coach

that doesn't mean Tim isn't weird.

Yeah completely normal. How do you think I got to be a Michigan State/LSU/Miami Dolphins/Alabama fan?

Interesting stuff.

Carolina DE Julius Peppers has been linked to the Bears as their No.1 target in free agency, Antrel Rolle could be a player when the Bears look to add to the free safety position, and the word around the media room this morning is that the Bears will not be shy when it comes to opening their wallets come March.

The daily rumor here in Indy when it comes to the Bears? Going after both Rolle and Aaron Kampman of the Packers.

unless no one offers him the money, i wouldn't expect peppers. all things being equal, southerners prefer warmer weather and peppers has voiced his desire to play olb in a 3-4. i'm going to plead ignorance, and this is not a rhetorical question, but when is the last time a big-time free agent that wasn't old as hell signed in a cold weather city with a sub .500 team and without a domed playing field?

I'm not going to get my hopes up but thats awesome to hear about the Bears.

The question though is why does the franchise care now? They've been known for years as a somewhat cheap organization, not known for shelling out money for FAs, and often questioned about their desire to do everything to win. Their fan base is as rabid as ever, and the economy probably hasn't affected the attendance figures one bit, or at least not enough to decide that there needs to be much more pressure to win now. So what makes them decide that now they want to make bold moves and do whatever to win? Did they just decide enough is enough? The Cutler trade surprised the heck out of me. That just isn't something you ever expect the Bears to do. But this surprises me twice as much. The Bears want to take advantage of the uncapped offseason by opening up their wallets to get the top FAs? That's crazy. Maybe they are looking to sell the team in the near future and are trying to up the value?

Does TO count? And the Packers were just 9-7 when Reggie White signed with them in 1992. That's close.

How about Jevan Kearse, Tennessee to Philly? (Sorry dew)

I'd say Kearse would definitely qualify. What a player he was for the Titans, too.

Who knows, but each city is different. Chicago hasn't tried to get big named FAs, and they are certainly different to sign with than Cleveland or Green Bay.

Albert Haynesworth? Last year?

Edit: I guess the Redskins were 8-8 the year before, so that doesn't technically qualify.

Kind of a trick question. Of the cold weather/outdoor teams, the Bears, Steelers, Packers, Patriots, Ravens, and Giants aren't big players for big-time FAs from other teams because they build thru the draft and typically have been good at it. Cleveland, Cincy, KC, and Buffalo have been pretty bad in recent history and aren't attractive to FAs. That just leaves the Jets, Broncos, Eagles, and Redskins. The Jets get plenty of big named players, but they traded for Kris Jenkins, Braylon Edwards, Thomas Jones, Lito Sheppard, and Greg Ellis; and they've signed cold weather guys like Faneca, Leonhard, and Bart Scott. The Eagles aren't big FA players either, but they have signed a few players from other cold weather teams also (Samuels, Sean Jones, Andrews, and essentially Jason Peters). Denver signed a couple of Eagles last offseason. So, I think it's more coincedence than anything a warm weather player hasn't gone to these places.

The Redskins have signed DeAngelo Hall and Haynesworth in the last couple years for ATL and TEN respectively.

Why do I have a feeling the Bears are gonna trade Olsen before next season starts?

I think signing Manu could have more effect on Dez Clark's future. Olsen has too much talent just to disgard for what could be 1 year of Martz and will be 1 year left of Clark. Dez missed 5 games last year and was a non-factor in all but 4-5 games last year. He'll be 33 when the season starts, and doesn't have much left. I know Olsen hasn't shown anything great, but he is talented enough as a receiver on a team devoid of elite talent at WR to find a place in the offense for him to get 50-60 balls.

Okay lets just call Olsen a possession receiver and not get rid of a good young tight end for a OC who hopefully will be gone in a season or two.

Why hopefully? Hopefully Martz fixes this inept offense, which just happens to include a disappointing TE, and stays for a while.

We need Martz/Lovie to succeed more than we do Olsen. If they sign Manu, they'll trade Olsen on draft-day for a much needed pick. But could he pull in anything more than a 3rd?

and if olsen is less valuable at receiver than someone who actually plays receiver in martz's offense, why play him out of position if you can get something for him?

martz has said that he won't play a tight end at receiver when he can put a receiver at that position. olsen will play tight end and he will learn to block or he will not play for the bears anymore.

there's always some risk when you deal a player with potential like Olsen, but in my mind he hasn't done anything to make me feel like he's untouchable.

It would depend on the return value.

The Giants got 2nd/5th for Shockey, and the Browns got a 2nd/5th for Winslow. If the Giants and Browns get a 2nd/5th for what people considered underachieving TEs at the time of the trade, then I image the Bears could realistically ask for a minimum of a 2nd rd pick.

With that said, NE has three 2nd rd picks and some mocks have them at least exploring the idea of drafting a TE. I would gladly take the 47th or 53th pick off the Patriots hands for Olsen.
