Interesting . . .

The Chicago Bears continued on their quest to fill out their offensive coaching staff today, meeting with former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Tice at Halas Hall, according to Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune.

I hope to god they are only considering him for OL coach

Actually I hope he's more of an assistant TE coach. I think this team needs a real OL coach, and Tice isn't even really that.

Tice was an outstanding OL coach for the Vikings before being named head coach.

I don't know that he'd be successful as an OC, but he would let Cutler air it out downfield.

Yeah, he is widely regarded as being a strong OL coach. I would not mind him added in that capacity, but would kill somebody if he is given any more responsibility than that.

Sharpen your knives; I just heard he interviewed for OC. Not OL.

As for free agents, I would love for the Bears to make a splash and sign Logan Mankins from NE. But I know they are bargain shoppers so I wont' even pretend that's going to happen.

I really think you are overstating their bargain shopper reputation. They just signed a $5m/year OT last offseason (plus 2 more guys to substantial money), and that is hardly a bargain. They traded 2 1s for a franchise QB and extended him in the same offseason. They traded for Ogunleye when he was a holdout for more money and signed him. They overpaid big for Tait, paid Miller a lot, gave Muhsin a big contract, etc. They aren't the Redskins, but they aren't bargain shoppers. New England and Philly are big bottom shoppers than the Bears. Chicago doesn't even let their guys go as often as most other teams.

I thought Khalil Bell did enough this year to get another look at back up RB next year.

Yeah, I was being nice. They don't go after big time difference makers....kinda like the Cubs.

Some of you will hate this...doesn't bother me at all though...

Bears G.M. Jerry Angelo confirmed that Jay Cutler is a key part of the interview process as the Bears search for an offensive coordinator.

"We've involved Jay, and we'd like to have him meet with [all] the candidates," Angelo said. "He understands the whole process, and he knows we want him involved. This is not the first time we've involved a player. This isn't new to us."

I only hate that it adds fuel to the "pampered Cutler" story.

It's distressing, but entirely expected. They aren't going to find a top OC, or a top DC. It's got to be someone who is fine with not being able to unpack the suitcases for a year.

I'm perfectly fine with that. I think he SHOULD be involved. Hell, I think he should be involved in whether or not we go after any receivers at this point honestly. If he thinks we're OK in that department, then I say we stand pat there too, but if he thinks we need a true 1, then I hope we go get him one......

The Bears are close to an agreement that would bring Mike Tice to Chicago as their offensive line coach, the Tribune has learned. The team has been very aggressive in negotiations and could strike a deal today.

I never knew of him as an OL coach, but rather a tight ends coach or head coach, so I don't know what his rep is there. But at least it's an actual NFL coach.

He was the offensive line coach for the Vikings from 1997 through 2001. From what I've heard, his reputation is as a great O-line coach.

Tice officially hired as OL coach according to ChicagoBears.com.

I think you'll see a nice rebound from Matt Forte in 2010. I doubt its a coincidence that wherever Tice has gone, the running game has excelled.

As I said he was a good OL coach for the Vikings for about 5 years. Some of it was that he had a really good line to begin with, but they stayed fairly consistent when McDaniel and Steussie left. Because of that his legend grew into "we've gotta keep that O-line coach around" pretty universally. That allowed McCombs to go on the super cheap without fan revolt.

I think it would be a good hire. Obviously he had 4 Pro Bowlers (at least 3 first round picks) in Minnesota who were fairly established before he got there, but they maintained at a pretty high level.

Tice was so/so as OL coach. I dont see this as a HUGE upgrade over anyone, really.

What makes you say he was so/so? He had a great o-line in 2000 after losing two starters, one of whom was a Hall of Famer and the other, a Pro Bowler. It was Stringer's best (and last) year so he still had a legit stud but he also helped get Birk to the Pro Bowl in his first season as a starter.

I can't argue that it will be a HUGE upgrade. I think the Bears o-line problems were due to being old and bad more so than coaching. Tice also had a lot of talent on his lines in Minnesota, but they were still consistently a top-tier unit.

Cut: Clark, Kreutz, Kevin Jones and Dvoracek (are they still on the roster?), Vasher, Pace, Bullocks

Well they already messed up your fantasy offseason most likely...

Olin Kreutz's role in meeting with new offensive line coach Mike Tice on Thursday during his interview at Halas Hall shows the degree of respect that management and coach Lovie Smith have for him, a sign that the 12-year veteran will likely return in 2010.

Even though I like Tice, it's not that simple. The running game in Minnesota excelled when he had Robert Smith running behind 3 Pro Bowlers with a defense that was loosened up due to Moss and Carter. When he was head coach it didn't excel consistently at all. He's been TE coach in Jax where they've had great running backs.

To me, a nice rebound would be for Forte to repeat his 2008 numbers. 1200 rushing yards, 450 receiving yards, 3.9-4.0 ypc. He probably would have done it without Tice, but I do believe adding Tice can't hurt. I am a firm believer that 2008 was closer to the real Forte than 2009 was.

did you see our OLine this year?

This is definitely a solid hire, and an upgrade. Tice has a real history of success coaching OLine at this level.

Tice may very well be an upgrade for us, but unless we get some new linemen for him to work with, it isn't going to matter very much at all.

this, soul. Tice was good when he had talent, so/so when he didn't. he basically plays the music given to him.
