Perhaps it is too early, but now that Angelo's plan to shore up DE has blown up, something will need to be done. Alex Brown is alright but Anderson can't handle starting at DE, and Izzy can't either. Plus, we can't play Izzy everywhere to shore up more and more deficiencies. There's also little depth at DE, even if Melton steps up.

With the plethora of other needs on this team and few draft picks to fill them, this just puts the Bears in an even more difficult position.

Condolences to the Adams family.

Would of been nice to allow the OC to hire his own OL coach.

It's usually the HC that chooses his assistant staff, and Lovie is still the HC.

I got the feeling they wanted Gilbert as an eventual 3 technique replacement for Tommie Harris, not really DE.

We don't even know if Gilbert or Melton are anything more than depth players at this point

But the theory was the OC would have autonomy over the offense. Lovie doesn't know anything about offense. But they've kept a couple assistants and just hired a new one without OC input, which tells me the OC is going to have less autonomy than anticipated.

Couple things:

RIP Gaines Adams. Way too young to pass.

On Dusty- didn't he have some drinking and violence related issues early on in his college career? He had apparently turned it around by his senior year, which is why Angelo was willing to draft him, and this is the first incident I've heard of this kind of behavior out of him.

With the Gaines thing, I personally don't think it would have mattered much even with him here. I still think we needed to get a good D-lineman, either DT or DE. With Gilbert being able to slide over I think the goal would have been to get the best lineman, not necessarily a DE.

That's sort of the catch 22 situation they are in. They need a guy who could be the de facto offensive HC, but with these circumstances the available candidates aren't likely to be up to it.

Unless it was Martz....

I'm guessing more than ever this means Martz is in the background; not a top choice right now.

I agree, the Bears needed DL help either way. The DT class is strong at the top, which means nothing to the Bears. The DE class is pretty strong in the middle. And with the ability of Idonije and Gilbert to play everywhere, it was a toss up for biggest need on the DL. I was leaning toward DE based on where the Bears pick in the draft. And the Bears were still in a position with 2 DEs who hadn't done much in 2-3 years (Anderson, Adams), a rookie who missed all of 09 (Melton), and a veteran on his last legs (Brown), along with the 2 guys mentioned earlier.

With Adams gone, it definitely affects the Bears offseason plans. In my mock, I had the Bears picking a DE first (2nd rounder from Hester trade). Now without a former #4 overall pick to hope to turn around, the Bears need some serious talent there, enough to possibly make this the #1 need in the draft, assuming they get some OL help thru free agency.

Then by extension you must also be saying the Bears wasted that 2nd rounder on Adams, tragic death aside

non first round DE do no impress me. Getting a DE in the 3rd, or even with the mythological 2nd, isn't going to help much if you are looking for top end talent. They'd be better off hunting for another Anderson late and hoping to find a gem.

i've always thought that gilbert would make a great DE in a 3-4. if we went that way, tommie and gilbert could play the ends with harrison at NT, the aging urlacher in the middle, which would help his game out, with briggs next to him and roach and jamar williams on the outside.

QFT, except get a better NT than Harrison.

well, yeah, but i'm just talking about guys on our roster right now. a new NT would be nice if that happened.

I've been thinking of ways to make the 3-4 work with this team for a while, but it would never happen. They have depth and quantity at LB, and no great lineman.

i think we lack a 3-4 NT and good ones are hard to find.
