This is from a few weeks ago, but I wonder if it's still applicable. I guess Cutler really likes the guy, which probably means something.

But if current quarterback Jay Cutler has anything to say about who might replace Turner, he's likely to lobby for current USC offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates, according to multiple sources who have talked with ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Cutler knows Bates from their days in Denver, when Bates was an assistant to Mike Shanahan and worked with Cutler. After Shanahan was fired, Cutler told the team he would only stay in Denver if Bates stayed, according to Schefter's sources.

He's the guy whose name keeps coming up, potentially as a QB coach under another OC. He's never been an NFL OC, and has only been a college OC for one year (so Pete Carrol would probably cry about him leaving eligibility on the table). If you are trying to find the next Sean Payton, this might be the guy. But I would really hope he brings guys with real NFL coaching experience with him.

Actually, if USC fans are any indication, Pete Carroll would probably throw him a parade for leaving. Hopefully he can be a QB coach, not an OC (though some of the complaints about his play calling are that his plays are too complex for college kids - not necessarily a big complaint when it comes to NFL players who don't have to go to class and are more likely to grasp complex offenses).

I'm a little nervous about Marinelli becoming the DC -- mainly because he's never been one and I feel like Lovie is still going to have his hands all over the D. Regardless, I think we can still improve with a good OC, Oline coach, and QB coach,

Would he take a limo from USC to Chicago?

Lovie was going to have his hands on the defense if he was going to return, and he was always going to return. I'm not all that concerned with Marinelli's lack of DC history. He's been an NFL coach forever, he's been an asst head coach, and head coach, and has a bevy of experience in the tampa 2 system working under Dungy, Kiffin and Lovie. Compare that to Babich who has one year in the NFL before coming to the Bears, and then got Rivera's job.

Meanwhile, Joe Cullen, Marinell's defensive line coach when Marinelli was the head coach of the Detroit Lions, was spotted at Halas Hall last week and could take over the Bears' defensive line from Marinelli.

In 2006, the Lions suspended Cullen after he was arrested twice, once on a drunk-driving charge and the other on a charge of driving naked through a fast-food drive-through lane.

Fantastic.

So ESPN1000 tried to talk to Martz and apparently he said he wouldn't come on until the Bears contacted him. But he did confirm interest in the job.

Looks like it's not Marinelli according to what I just heard on ESPN1000. They're saying that it was discussed but have decided to go elsewhere... outside the organization.

Appears it was a bad report.

I'd take the risk on Bates. 2nd option would be Weis. I'm scared of Martz. He hasn't been a good coordinator in a long time.

Of the names mentioned, I think that is the order I'd go as well.

Assuming the defense remains weak in 2010 and they struggle, Bates is in position to be HC with a new defensive overhaul, minimizing the changes Cutler would have to go through.

Dug this up from when Bates was hired at USC.

Quarterback Jay Cutler:

"Jeremy is one of the best offensive minds in football. He was extremely innovative with our offense and took our playbook to the next level with some of the things he did, keeping defenses off balance and changing our look but at the same time keeping it simple for us players. Some of the things he did were amazing to watch. He was always watching other teams and coming up with new ideas for our offense. He helped me grow into my third NFL season and helped me reach the Pro Bowl along with some of the other goals I set for myself. As a unit, our offense became one of the most productive in the league with Jeremy calling plays. He brought a lot of excitement to the meeting room and on the field. He made me want to come to work every day and get better. Jeremy will do great things in his new role, and USC couldn't have picked a better guy."

Relegate Lovie to the role of figurehead. Bring in OC/DC who may very well be the next HC. Sell it to them like that.

Lovie is head coach in title only. Essentially a cheerleader for the real workhorses.

Turner, Butkus, Hamilton, Hiestand and a couple other offensive assistants officially will not return.

The Hiestand firing is just as big for me, if not bigger. Maybe we can finally get someone in here who knows how to develop OLine talent effectively.

"I really hope I get a phone call," he said. "I'm excited about it. Obviously, I'd love to work for Lovie. From a selfish standpoint, it would be a great situation for me. Working for someone you know and believe in would be ideal. There is real potential there."

"Cutler has more talent than anybody I've ever seen," Martz said. "When he came out I gave him the best grade of any quarterback I've ever graded. But I don't know him. Until you sit down and work with a guy, you don't really know him."
