It was worse at the beginning of this year. There's never been a season where it was unplayable on day 1 like this year.

You really need to get off this whole "everyone was against my team so now I'm pissy about it" BS.

What in the world are you talking about? This has nothing to do with "my team" nor am I pissy about anything.

You were ranting about how awful field turf is while I and other Bears fans were telling you Soldier Field has been awful for years. As if today's surfaces were somehow related to the garbage that was astroturf.

It's not a big deal, I was just curious why you were so adamant this summer that the Bears should never switch to that junk but now it's okay. Whether it was awful from the first game or not, it's been consistently terrible from October on for years. They should make the switch if they can't maintain it.

Fine. I am OK with a field deteriorating over the course of the year. It seems natural to me. That's how I played football, and it was fun. I feel like there's an element of fun to that for many players, and for fans.

But to me, having a field that is destroyed by a rock band for game 1 of the damn year (or it may have been the 2nd game, or whatever, but it was in September), shows me that they just don't have the competence to do what they need to do in order to have a basic grass field that shows what I consider to be normal wear & tear over the course of the season.

It's really not about whether I still think FieldTurf is worse than grass. My opinion on that hasn't changed. I never said that I think it is OK to switch to FieldTurf either. But I am coming to the conclusion that they can't even provide a basic level of decent field maintenance for the Bears. It's a completely different issue, at least to me.

Sounds like a pathetic and ugly win. Good because it probably drops Denver a few picks and decreases the potential of them humiliating us with a stud 1st rounder. And also good because the horrific coaching staff didn't score too many points with this one. A win win.

I heard this morning that Weis has expressed interest in the Bears OC position if it becomes available. I do not know any more details, as it was a Score update and I was busy trying to keep my truck from sliding off the road in the snow. But that's the first time I have heard Weis reciprocating interest from his side of the equation.

edit: I see this has also been posted in the Notre Dame Weis firing thread.

On ESPN's Monday Night Countdown, Adam Schefter says that USC's OC Jeremy Bates is a name to keep an eye on if the Bears do decide to go in a different direction on offense.

Bates has a very good relationship with QB Jay Cutler, as they were together in Denver from 2006-08 before being replaced after Mike Shanahan's dismissal. USC coach Pete Carroll has never held back his coaches from pursuing NFL opportunities. So, it would be a logical fit

Quite frankly, I've never heard of Jeremy Bates, so would somebody fill me in on Bates?

Every USC fan I know wants Bates fired as USC's OC if that's worth anything (I don't know how much of USC's offensive woes can be blamed on him). There are definitely better options out there.

My biggest problem with Bates is that he criminally under uses Allen Bradford. My 2nd biggest problem with him is that he treated the season like an NFL showcase calling all kinds of complicated multi level reads at Barkley. Maybe it'll pay off in the future but it killed me when Barkley would get into a huddle, drain the play clock down, and have to make some difficult NFL style throw that he wasn't ready for. He flat out couldn't read the defenses quickly enough for that. At some point it never occurred to him to simplify things and mix the tempo of the offense up (i.e. going no huddle).

He did seem to succeed in Denver with a vertical passing game and getting Cutler on the move so maybe he's just more suited to the NFL.

I agree on the Bradford bit but I also felt like in years past, USC underused Stafon Johnson and CJ Gable in favor of Joe McKnight (especially back when McKnight had fumblitis) so I thought it might have been a point of emphasis from higher up than the OC.

Johnson got more carries last year than Bradford did this year and that's when Sanchez was in the fold. You'd think Bates would want to protect his freshman QB with a steady dose of his big power back but no. McKnight's had a fine year so I'm not really miffed about that.

Anway, I don't want this to get all USC centric but I really only see Bates here if Shanahan is too.

I'd have no problem with giving Charlie Weis a shot. He's succeeded in the Pros. He would be highly motivated. Can't necessarily blame him for not winning in college, which is a different game.

I know there are those who might not be in favor of it, but the fact remains the Bears are several players away from being a contender. So unless the Bears can make that kind of commitment this offseason to bringing in key FA, I think the Bears need to at least consider shopping Briggs. If there is one position the Bears seem to develop decent players is at LB, so shopping Briggs and getting a couple of draft picks or perhaps a young player and a draft pick in return might make the Bears better then keeping Briggs.

I'm trying to think........and other than Cutler, I don't think there's anyone who should be considered untouchable. Depends on the deal, of course, but overall if there's someone who we can get value for in return, I think it should be looked at.

i'm all for trading briggs if we can get a first rounder and a serviceable OL out of it.

You typically don't see a lot given up for defensive players who aren't elite pass rushers or pass defenders. Briggs is great in his own right, but there wasn't that much return for Julian Peterson, Will Witherspoon, or Jonathan Vilma. Briggs is better than all 3, but again 4-3 OLB isn't a complete team changer like a shutdown CB or double digit sackmaster would be.

I still think the route to go if you are going to trade is see if anyone thinks Hester still has elite return ability and like his upside as a 2 WR enough to give up a 2nd. Knox can do everything he can do. And it gives you the $ to get a legit #1 and a pick to get a lineman.

the st. louis rams have released richie incognito, a guy i have liked for a while.

No one likes Richie Incognito. He was an [expletive] at Nebraska who was in trouble like 17 times. He's been an [expletive] every day he's been in the NFL.

which means he's pretty much the same person as olin kreutz, if olin kreutz could block someone. no one needs to like him.

Except that type of thing leads to guys being more interested in being dicks than actually blocking people. I don't think Incognito is any good.
