Does Ole Miss travel well enough to warrant a deal between the Cotton Bowl and the Outback to swap SEC representatives?

I don't know how well Ole Miss travels. Traditionally the SEC East team goes to the Outback, so that's why I'm assuming it for UT.

There's one report speculating that a swap might be possible.

There could be a swap of sorts in play with the Outback Bowl and Cotton Bowl.

The Outback gets first choice out of the East and the Cotton first choice out of the West after the Capital One selects. But since Ole Miss went to the Cotton Bowl last year, there may be a deal worked out where the Rebels go to the Outback this year and Tennessee to the Cotton. The Vols finished in a tie with Georgia for second place in the East, but beat the Bulldogs head-to-head.

Interesting. I hadn't heard about that. Where does it appear Northwestern will go?

I'm thinking now that if Wisconsin defeats Hawai'i next weekend, it's probably 90% Outback for Wisconsin and Champs for Northwestern. If Wisconsin falls, there's a 50% chance Northwestern goes to the Outback and Wisconsin heads back to Orlando.

Wisconsin is still the likeliest to go to Tampa, though I'm not sure if a rematch of the Outback from 2 years ago is a good thing or a bad thing in the eyes of their committee.

I doubt they'd want a rematch. That may be why they're trying to make the trade - so that they can take Wisconsin and match them up with Ole Miss instead of Tennessee again.

So what does UCLA gain by taking those 3 timeout to 2010?

Why is USC running a play action bomb in that situation rather than a dive up the middle? And quite frankly, that's not what bugged me. What bugged me is that Carroll was jumping up and down 10 yards onto the field and everyone on the USC sideline was running onto the field or pointing and gesturing at the other sideline. Total bush league. But go ahead, Carroll, bitch to Harbaugh and then do the same crap.

And that play also took away from questioning the reffing on such plays as the "whistle" blowing the Jonathan Franklin lateral dead and causing them to run a do-over.

When asked afterwards, the UCLA coaches and players didn't have a problem with it. If you don't want the game extended, don't call time outs.

This is much ado about nothing. A lot of Bruin fans whining. Of course, when you lose nine of the last ten to the Trojans, a much better football program, I guess their misguided frustration is understandable, if not justified.

Next time don't call time outs.

Of course the players and coaches said that, they're media savvy. I think their reaction on the field to USC's classy display showed their true opinion.

It's not misguided frustration; you run up the score AND then taunt the other team, you can't expect the other team nor it's fans to not be upset. It has nothing to do with UCLA's record in recent years against USC. It's extremely amusing watching Trojan fans go to extreme measures to defend this move yet get worked up when Stanford ran up the score on them. Apparently Pete Carroll isn't the only hypocrite around.

Yes, don't call the time outs so UCLA can be called out for giving up on the game. (Oddly enough, I've repeatedly said the part that bugged me wasn't the play call but the taunting and excessive celebration following the play. Of course you choose to ignore that.) But by all means, please, continue defending your team's sportsmanship...only when they don't get blown out by 30+. I definitely missed your particular brand of reason following the USC-Oregon and USC-Stanford games.

Let me check your reaction from the previous thread about Stanford running up the score...

Oh.

Also, Washington.

considering how quickly the voice of reason disappears when things go south for usc, i'm guessing he just wasn't around by that point.

I've read that too, but I don't think they have to worry about us playing there back-to-back and not drawing a crowd because of it. It'll be played in Jerry World this year, so a new venue and a new city (Arlington) makes a big difference.

That said, I wouldn't mind playing in the Outback. I'm tired of beating up on Big 12 teams. Five of our last six bowl games have been against Big 12 teams and we've won all those games. It'd be a nice change of pace to play an ACC team, and I was really hoping for Cap One so we could play the Big 10.

Looks like initial reports were wrong. Instead of Jerry Gray, Memphis has hired LSU assistant Larry Porter as its new head coach.

"The Memphis job is the perfect job in the perfect place for me," said Porter, who accepted the job late Friday night. "I understand the Memphis brand. I believe in it unconditionally. I have a conviction, a passion about it, and a vision that allows me to walk into homes in this community, talk to the student body and faculty and get them to believe in that vision."

Porter ranks sixth in career rushing at Memphis with 2,194 yards, and scored 20 touchdowns from 1990-93. He later coached at Tennessee-Martin, Arkansas State and Oklahoma State before joining Les Miles at LSU, where Porter has coached running backs since 2005.

Maybe Tommy West was right when he said Memphis shouldn't even have a football team. A Running Backs coach?? Way to sell yourself short there Memphis.

I think this was expected. Danielson & Lundquist (?) were discussing this likelihood during the Arkansas-LSU game.

thank god usc is on its way out as an elite program

The USC bandwagon is probably the most annoying around.

While they aren't as good as they were in the early/mid 2000's when they had Bush, Leinhart, Palmer, etc. I still consider them and "elite" program. They will still continue to bring in 4-5 star recruits and have a solid coaching staff. They will still be a top 10 probably in pre-season polls next year and be favorites to win the PAC-10. Also I think USC's "fall," if that's what you want to consider it, over the last few years is more associated to Pac-10 teams on a whole improving more than it is USC getting worse.

They have some great recruits lined up already, but the level of the Pac-10 is much improved. I think the constant coaching changes has caught up with them too. Its no longer a foregone conclussion that USC will win the Pac-10 in August.

There was an ESPN report sometime last week I think that reported sources were saying that Jerry Gray would be named the new HC. I guess it's been expected over the weekend since he agreed to it Friday night.

Both ESPN projection analysts have NU in the Outback with Champs to Wisconsin. Wonder what's behind that unless they're just assuming the refs are going to screw another Big Ten team in Hawaii.

One also has Ole Miss to the Outback, as well.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/bowls/projections?season=2009&week=13

Of course, one of them had NU to the Alamo yesterday, which wasn't possible. Most everyone else has Tennessee in the Outback with Wisconsin.

I'd enjoy a UT/NU matchup or a UT/Ok St matchup. For some reason, though, I think I'd really enjoy watching us play against Northwestern.

If the ESPN guys are right about NU getting the Outback, I don't see any way Tennessee doesn't get the Outback bid. With the Monte ties and avoiding another UT/Wisconsin matchup, I think it'd be the best deal for the Outback.

even if wisconsin fans/grads are tired of playing in the outback every year and tired of playing tennessee, there are a lot more wisconsin fans than northwestern fans and wisconsin people travel better.

I'm not really saying the Outback would want Northwestern more than Wisconsin, I'm saying if the Outback wants Wisconsin then it'll likely try to get a different matchup than Wisconsin/UT again - something like a deal with the Cotton Bowl to trade UT for Ole Miss.

If the Outback chooses Northwestern, though, I think Tennessee's a shoe-in because you don't have the dislike of having a rematch.

The biggest thing Wisconsin has to worry about in terms of traveling is that the Outback might have the perception that they're not going to travel as well as they have in the past after going to Hawaii this Saturday and all the recent trips to Florida (last 5 years).

In Northwestern's favor is all the work our AD put in with them last year during the process despite getting jumped by Iowa. We also travel quite well to bowl games, outdrawing Mizzou fans last year in the Alamo Bowl, which had a higher attendance than an Iowa vs. South Carolina matchup in last year's Outback Bowl by about 800. That definitely had to get the attention of the Outback Bowl committee. And when you factor in the large alumni base we have on the east coast, including Florida, and the fact we haven't been to Florida since the 1997 Citrus Bowl, I wouldn't be surprised at all if we would outdraw Wisconsin fans there this year.
