well, you consider they have fatso Brett Wallace in their top 30, so there might be other factors too

Wallace is a big guy, but Decker...well...

I'd love to see an outfield of Jaff Decker, Kyle Blanks, and out of shape Andruw Jones.

Not sure where this best goes, but I remember somewhere people talking about thinking someone was black/white and they were the opposite. Yeah, no clue why I thought Brett Jackson was black.

I thought so too. Maybe it was the tools on the scouting report. This is a Troy O'Leary level shock for me. I haven't been this surprised since I found out Hak-Ju Lee was Serbian.

Callis had a chat a few days ago on BA's Top 100.

JAYPERS (IL)

Which five prospects just missed? (#s 101-105)

Jim Callis

(2:09 PM)

The five guys I liked the best who didn't make it were: Diamondbacks 3B Bobby Borchering, Royals 1B Eric Hosmer, Marlins 3B Matt Dominguez, Orioles 1B Brandon Snyder and Twins OF Ben Revere. In retrospect, I wish I had pushed harder for Red Sox SS Jose Iglesias (everyone I ask about him can't stop gushing about his defense) and Cubs SS Hak-Ju Lee.

Gerald (St. Louis)

Is Elvis Andrus a good comp for Starlin Castro?

Jim Callis

(2:21 PM)

I don't really think so. Andrus is a flashy defender with a solid bat, while I think Castro will be a solid defender and stick out more offensively.

Danny (PA)

Out of these, who (if any) are decent or better bets to be top 100 guys in 2011 or beyond: Tommy Joseph, Guillermo Pimentel, Daniel Fields, Brandon Jacobs, Rymer Liriano, Roman Mendez, Miguel Velazquez, Richard Alvarez, Robinson Lopez, Jonathan Singleton, and Dae Eun Rhee?

Jim Callis

(2:33 PM)

I will pick one hitter and one pitcher: Tommy Joseph and Dae Eun Rhee.

scooter (chicago)

what is starlin castro's power ceiling? double digit hrs?

Jim Callis

(2:46 PM)

Yes. Ceiling is probably 20ish, more likely to hit 15-18.

Mike (Ohio)

You mentioned Hak-Ju Lee. With Castro coming on, could the Cubs face an issue there at SS eventually?

Jim Callis

(2:53 PM)

Yes. Lee is more athletic, so I could see him pushing Castro to second base.

This is the first time i've heard 20HR potential attached to Castro.

I want to be excited, but I think we're getting too far ahead of ourselves with this guy.

On a side note, I selfishly hope the Cubs let Lee hit Peoria for a little while this season. I'd love to make the short drive over there to see him play a few times.

The 20+ish HR potential has been thrown out there before. I'm not sure if I can buy it either, but it's built upon scouting reports regarding his bat.

I imagine Lee will be at Peoria for a good chunk of the year. Maybe a mid-late season call-up to Daytona (if he performs well).

I don't know if I buy that he will be able to be a 20+ HR guy consistently over his career, but I could buy into the fact he could have a outlier season (maybe 2 or 3) where he gets into the 20's. Hopefully he can at least be a 12-16 HR guy consistently though, with 40-50 total XBH.

I was shocked when I found out that J JAX was black and even more shocked when I found out B Jax was white.. complete nonsense.. :-)) :-))

For the longest time I thought Donald Veal was white. It happens, especially when you don't really get to see theirfaces (provided you're too lazy to check the website and look at their bios like I, and apparently a lot of people, am).

That being said, Brett Jackson looks like John Krasinkski

From yesterday's Ask BA

Now that the Top 100 Prospects have been posted, who are the six players you believe are most likely to appear on the 2011 list who didn't make it this year?

Jerry Kahn

San Diego

. . .

These are the six best players I thought were excluded from the Top 100, and where I ranked them on my personal list: Diamondbacks third baseman Bobby Borchering (No. 76), Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer (No. 79), Marlins third baseman Matt Dominguez (No. 81), Orioles first baseman Brandon Snyder (No. 82), Twins outfielder Ben Revere (No. 86) and Cubs shortstop Hak-Ju Lee (No. 92).

Kevin Goldstein's Top 101 Prospects list is out:

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=10142

Four Cubs made the list:

31. Josh Vitters

37. Starlin Castro

63. Hak-Ju Lee

96. Brett Jackson

Castro is his 4th SS behind Alcides Escobar, Dee Gordon, and Miguel Sano. This shouldn't come as much of a surprise as KG is more down on Castro than most others, though 37 isn't bad. Also, none of the pitchers made the list, but since he didn't rate any of them higher than 3* prospects, this isn't a surprise.

Castro behind Sano? That's amusing.

Lee @ 63 is pretty unexpected

Not really, maybe higher than expected, but KG loves tools. In the chat he is doing right now, he just said he thinks Castro is more polished, but that he thinks Lee has better tools.

Not necessarily. Goldstein rated Lee as the Cubs third best prospect, behind Vitters and Castro. He is higher on Lee than anyone from BA or Klaw.

Posted

eh, I much prefer BA's order of our guys than Goldstein's. While I don't think Lee is a top 100 prospect ... I can see reasons for him to be there, but man ... at 63, that's just really high for a far, far away kid whose bat has a ton of work. I say this as a very hopeful Lee fan, but that just seems high.

Goldstein's lists this year took some heat, and justifiably so. Adjusting his star rankings .. not the best idea.
