CB Bucknor Removed from WS Ump Roster

MLB wants veterans only in the WS because of all the mistakes made this postseason.

CB Bucknor was in line to work the World Series for the first time this year. But he missed two calls in Game 1 of the division series between the Red Sox and Angels, damaging his chance to get picked, one of the three people said.

NEW YORK -- Stung by a rash of blown calls in the playoffs, Major League Baseball is breaking tradition and sticking with only experienced umpires for the World Series.

Longtime crew chiefs Joe West, Dana DeMuth and Gerry Davis, along with Brian Gorman, Jeff Nelson and Mike Everitt will handle the games, three people with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press this week.

MLB umpires have come under fire after a number of bad calls during the 2009 playoffs.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement has not been made.

In 24 of the last 25 World Series, the six-man crew has included at least one umpire working the event for the first time -- baseball likes to reward newer umpires, plus replenish the supply of umps with Series experience.

What about McClelland? Didn't he make the most boneheaded calls of the postseason... in the same game?

Saying the runner tagged up early from 3rd and missing a tag of a runner off of 3rd that happened RIGHT in front of him?

These umps have been awful.

On an unrelated note, I also hate how delayed his strike calls are.

have they put Dusty in charge of who gets to ump in the WS? One blown call and your gone, wow. I wonder how many blown calls Joe West has had thru the years?

Bucknor is an awful umpire. I'm sure the people in charge are aware of that. He had no business working a WS game.

He has no business being an umpire.

I umpire with a minor league umpire in a high school fall league. I consider myself a decent high school umpire and very good youth umpire. However, I don't think it would be a good idea for me to pursue a career in umpiring. I make mistakes. However, there are a few umpires, myself included, that are easily considered better than this minor league umpire. It's no wonder the umpires at the ML level are so bad.

I think part of the problem is that there are a lot of good umpires that do not ever pursue the career. Until you make the majors you make a fairly poor salary. Many sharp umpires are not going to be lured away from their careers for a job that promises about $30,000 a year, with crappy travel and almost no chance of making it to the majors. It's easier to remove a supreme court justice than to remove a ML umpire.

ONE?

He blew three calls at first base in ONE game this post-season. Joe West sucks, too. But let's not pretend like it was one little infraction that got Bucknor removed. He's awful.

The point is that I'm not that good, but I'm better than the minor league ump and I'm not the only one in this league that is.
