The only good thing about benching him now, is that maybe some team will be dumb enough to think that they can turn Soto around during the off season and will trade something of value for him or it will motivate Soto to actually put in some work next year.

This only makes sense if they shut Soto down for the season - if they can't get him going on the field, they sure as hell are not going to get him going while sitting on the bench.

 

The only logic (if that's what you can call it) behind this could be:

 

1. Fox is needed in the field (Soriano's knee) making the "solution" used when Soto was on the DL unavailable

2. Iowa and Tennessee are trying to make the playoffs so their catchers are unavailable too.

I've talked to a handful of Cubs over the years and I'll say that besides Derrek Lee, Geo was easily the nicest one to fans. I've also heard a Cubs employees speak highly of Geo (and not of other Cubs). But yeah, he's a prick.
