Right now, this is clearly the Cardinals division to win or lose. Yeah, we can still take it, but it wont be easy. Right now, they're on a very hot streak, and were on an awful streak aside from that little league team we bullied this past weekend.

Either way, Ive waited this long, whats another year? If nothing else, hopefully the GM can fill some holes in the offseason without doing anything stupid.

That's not too much of a stretch, is it?

The Cards going 24-18 is a possibility, but for the Cubs to go 33-13 will take a streak of everything (health, Soto, Soriano, Marmol, etc.) turning around.

This thread cheered me up greatly and I thank you for that

This thread got my hopes up again and I hate you for that.

Ha, yea that is probably more accurate for what it did to me. I'll be drinking the kool-aid as we watch the Cardinals magic number dwindle down.

Yeah, not mine. I think I'm finally cured of such optimism.

There is a very fine line between optimism and stupidity. It's just plain stupid to think the Cubs can finish 33-13 when they've shown us no reason whatsoever to think they can be that good.

Yeah, we can win it. Just look at the epic meltdowns of the 2007 and 2008 Mets. The problem is, its no longer completely in our hands, its in the hands of the Cardinals, who are now a legitiamately good team. That lineup is as good as anything in the NL including the Phillies.

Yeah, that sums it up.

Removing Gregg from the closers roll could be a step in this direction although, it's going to take some doing on Lou's part to keep him from hurting the Cubs. Perhaps, he be used in a mop up roll the rest of the way because, I don't think DFA' is a realistic option. Soriano getting hot for the last two months could help along with Soto hell, I'd take just one of them getting hot.

If the Cubs split with LA and the Cards take 3 of 4 from San Diego, the Cubs would be seven games back, not 6.5.

For this reason alone, the Cubs will not win the division.

But if the Cubs take 2 of 3 from the Pads, and the Cards take 2 of 3 from the Dodgers they'd only be 5 back. Meaning they'd be 6 back in the above scenario.

Outside of getting home field advantage for the first round, does it really matter all that much how the Cubs make the playoffs? At this point winning the division is a pipe dream -- especially projecting a team that is only 4 games above .500 116 games into the season to play .750 ball the rest of the way. I don't care how easy the schedule may look...this team is just too darn inconsistent and the Cards have been rolling ever since they acquired Holliday, Lugo and DeRosa.

The Cubs are currently 4 games back in the wild card hunt and must climb over FOUR teams to win it...I am not even sure winning the WC is very likely to happen. The silver lining is the team is getting healthier for the stretch run...hopefully Marmol and/or Guzman can solidify the closer role, Soriano can earn his pay the rest of the way, and Z can show some discipline in his performing his prescribed exercises...that would a good start.

This team makes me not even care anymore. The Cardinals are running away with the division. We can't even beat a team with a good record. Hell, we can't beat a team with a bad record except for the Pirates and Reds.

I just hope the right decisions are made in the off-season.
